Default Stomach Cramps?

Has anyone dealt with severe cramps in the lower abdominal area? My general physician wanted me to stop taking my metoformin and I asked to get referred to an Endocrinologist. Any thoughts?

According to Dr. Bernstein ("Diabetes Solution") about 30% of his patients experience some intestinal distress on Metformin. He says most people get good results by not taking the Metformin on an empty stomach. He says if a patient still has trouble with it, that going to the extended release form usually helps.

I am on 500mg Metformin 2x a day. I have found that taking the morning dose with or right after breakfast has alleviated the intestinal distress I was experiencing. I can take the evening dose without meals and have no intestinal distress.

For some people the distress only lasts a couple of weeks (not for me). The Metformin is so beneficial to Diabetics in helping to lower blood sugar, and it has other benefits, like helping to prevent cancer. Also there is little risk of real hypoglycemic episodes. I would suggest trying it with food before stopping taking it.

The thing is, other than insulin, so many of the other drugs that are prescribed are rather hard on the pancreas.

You didn't say how big a dose you are taking... perhaps a lower dose might work better for you? Good luck with this.

I take both my morning and evening 500mg doses with meals. His theory was just go off it and see. My counts started rising so I went back to taking it. I'm hoping to get in to see and Endocrinologist soon.

I am taking 500 mg of Metformin 3 times a day. I take 1 in the morning with breakfast and 2 at night just before bed and have had no problems.

Are you eating any artificial sweeteners or sweetened goods? I just discovered that Xylitol and me don't mix, even in small doses.

I eat mine twice a day with meals as well. I certainly had issues in the beginning if I didn't take before I ate. Now I can take right after I eat if I forget to take before and I'm ok.
