Default Who else never cheats?

I'm very curious about this. In over 3 years since my Dx, and having discovered LC, I have never ONCE eaten anything with carbs. Even when cooking for others, if I need to taste a dish I just put the tiniest bit in my mouth, taste, then spit and rinse out my mouth. I know, it sounds fanatic, or like I have OCD, but I just take it for granted. Carbs are poison for me, I don't feel tempted by them, and I don't ever want to get on that carb-craving cycle again.

I attribute my success with carb-avoidance to the fact that I never eat anything sweet, no artificial sweeteners, no stevia, no nada. To me now, heavy cream tastes very sweet, unsweetened chocolate no longer tastes bitter.

However, let me say that even eating as I do my A1c is 5.9, so it's not like I feel that I have any margin for error. But when I read posts about people "falling off the wagon," and others agreeing that "it happens to all of us" I'm stunned. Am I the only person here who's so rigid about what I eat? Am I just completely nutso?

You're just extremely admirable!

On my own, I usually don't cheat. I usually fail when there's peer pressure to eat or when, like now, I'm a guest in someone's home and don't have control over my own meals and snacks. At home, I'd have a snack every 2-2.5 hours, so I wouldn't feel extremely hungry at mealtime and I'd make sensible choices.

I know, it's no excuse, but that's where I fail. I'll just do better tomorrow. Already I'm back on the wagon: celery, peanut butter, a chunk of cheese and two florets of broccoli for dinner. Unfortunately, I've also given in to a cup of tea, so not to be rude.

Nothing nutty at all. I am very similar to you in that I just don't eat any carbs, at least not willingly. There might be a sauce or ingredient that I am unaware is high carb, that would be accidental. The long term contraindications from high blood sugar are just not worth any short term snack. Unlike you, I do consume artificial sweeteners as I like the flavor and I doubt if it makes me crave real sugar.

Your post is a bit of a pun as I do consume a lot of nuts.

Not me, I bought and ate 6 bananas a couple of days ago. But then I have Novolog to cover a modest level of sinning.

I am one of those who sometimes give myself something with more carbs than I should, but when it happens it is something I have planned to really enjoy, and I know it will give me the pleasure I want.
Usually it is fruit.
But again, since my BG wont act as it should, I have sometimes days where I eat between 100 and 150 carbs and still cant get my BG over 3, so my LCHF with only 15-20 carbs a day is not the same all the time unfortunely.

I don't think your are nutso at all!! Personally I do not cheat. It comes from changing dressings on my late husband's stump and having to read to him after he went blind. I will not go down that road....ever! There is no carb laden food that can tempt me to "cheat or treat myself".

I do use the occasional artificial sweetener, but I am more of a salty savory person so never really craved sweets. Olives, pickles, and pickled peppers are my downfall. I keep carbs under 20 g most days with an occasional 22-24 gram day. I snack on nuts, cheese, Optimist cracker or celery with cream cheese, and cookies like MCS' Ginger Snappies. I'll occasionally have a square of Lindt 90% chocolate with a tsp of either fresh ground peanut butter or almond butter on it as a treat.

I probably could lower my dose or even eliminate my metformin, but I like the other benefits of the med so will probably continue to take it. I really thought my dr was going to lower my dose at my appt earlier this month, but I guess with the spine stuff going on, he decided not to play with anything else until that is sorted.

I was like that when I was first diagnosed. At 8 years old, mind you. I was thin as a twig before diabetes, and actually had to eat MORE to keep my insulin levels balanced. I didn't let myself have anything sweet for years, or anything too carb-y. However, I gained a lot of weight and in my early teens I was definitely chunky. I then started to eat whatever I wanted. Just small portions. I went from total OCD to complete madness. Then, I had a major surgery at 14 and I could not bring myself to eat ANYTHING. A doctor announced that I was starving myself and since then it's been a huge battle to find something I actually want to eat, or binging on foods I know I shouldn't have. It can be really confusing. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I understand how you feel, but don't let it consume you and don't judge others who have a really hard time with it either. Everybody is different... everyone has a different experience, some come from households where breakfast was usually a giant stack of pancakes and a pound of bacon and now it's scrambled eggs and a piece of whole wheat toast.

I seldom "cheat" - or as I prefer to say, eat "off plan". I think being gluten-intolerant helps because I really DO NOT want to be "glutened" - the consequences are very unpleasant. So for several years before being dx'd with diabetes I was already "programmed" to avoid some foods at all costs.

As I swerved into LC/HF, I found the options so much more satisfying than my previous diet that it is pretty easy to stay on plan. Any off plan eating is usually planned, and calculated to not spike my BG over 150 - preferably below 140 (I usually cruise at 110-118).

That said, I still do go on eating rampages, but its all "legal" LC foods - although even that can add up the carbs above optimum.

Abra, I don;t think you're going overboard. I also will taste and spit out and rinse if I'm making sometihing I can't eat. I'd rather "spend" the carbs on something more filling than a small taste of something carby.

My only "indulgence" is movie popcorn but I plan for it eat according for a few days, and my numbers haven't yet gone over 120 after having it so I'm ok with that. I don't "cheat" mainly because when I eat out and a sauce had more cards than I knew about and my numbers go up, I know how hard it is to get them down again. But like you I took a sip of the wrong drink (real coke), ran to the bathroom spit it out then rinsed my mouth and had a big laugh at myself when I realized how ridiculous that probably was.

I was such a total carb addict before that I think spitting and rinsing is just insurance. In French you say "un verre appelle un autre" about wine that's really good - one glass calls for another. And that's how I was about carbs, one piece of toast was 3-4, one cookie was 6-7, and so on. If I judge, I only judge myself, mainly because if I drank less wine I'd certainly be thinner. But I am amazed at how many people do allow themselves serious carbs from time to time and don't seem to suffer any consequences.

Oh - I wanted to add that my most recent A1c included 6 weeks spent on cruise ships, where it's MUCH harder to control what's in those sauces. I made a huge BFD about it to the chefs, but possibly my A1c might have been a little better had I been eating at home.
