Default First Diabetes Ed. Class Today

Went to my first D ed class today. The class last month was canceled so she combined some of it with todays scheduled topic, so we had Diabetes Basics and Carb Counting as today's topics.

I like the class, and felt there was decent information, along with some information that was contrary to what I've learned here, on BS101, and DietDr. She did promote a heavier test schedule, premeal, and 1.5hrs pp., but her recommended carb per meal load was too high.
I spoke with her individually after class, and told her that I was doing LCHF and am Ketogenic. She wasn't thrilled with my choice, but didn't try to tell me to stop, her primary objections seem to be based on kidney function. She was concerned about microalbumin levels and ketoacidosis, recommended regular labs for kidney function, and lots of water to help keep kidneys flushed.
She seemed impressed at how fast I got my bg numbers down, and how thoroughly I have been monitoring. When we were talking about fasting glucose numbers she saw my log where I've been logging 9+ tests per day.
Next class is on meal planning. I'm not sure it will be overly useful for me, but since it is free, I don't see any reason not to go.

It's a good idea to get all the info you can, and know what your options are.

There's a class?

Carolina, you are right, if I was going to abuse my diet I will do it in a nice steakhouse with fresh hot bread and butter to start, not a frigging big mac lol.

It's a real shame someone who is teaching a diabetes education class does not know the difference between being in ketosis and ketoacidosis ...

She knows the difference, she just wanted to be sure I was aware of ketoacidosis and to take care against it. My understanding from my reading is that ketoacidosis shouldn't be an issue as long as I stay in ketosis and don't have wildly fluctuating glucose levels. Since I don't plan to be out of ketosis that shouldn't be an issue for me.

When I was first dx'd there was a class I was supposed to go to. The first time they called me 1.5 hour before the scheduled start to tell me it was cancelled as I was the only one signed up. The second time they called me 1 hour before the start of the class to see if I was coming...um no, I live a good 35 minute drive away and I was certainly not dressed to go out the door. The third time was a night time class in winter in MT and I just don't go out at night then unless it is an emergency. Sooooo no classes for me..... BUT if you look at my signature, I did OK w/out them!!

I may be the only one that feels this way but if you take out my dislike for the Diabetic Class agendas and pretend that they are preaching something I believe in, still I have a problem with diabetic education classes that Drs. almost force you to take. My issue is the lack of privacy. I don't want people knowing my health conditions unless I choose to tell them. I don't want to go to a class with others who have no sense of confidentiality. Even if they don't know me, they may know my name and talk. I live in a town that is not huge and I am known in the community. I just feel it is no one else's business and by only offering education through classes, it is forcing people to lose their right to privacy. Even the "individual" consults in our clinic often have two patients at once with a nurse. Maybe its just me... I refused to attend even when they told me everyone in our clinic must attend a class upon diagnosis. They know better than to bring it up to me anymore.

Jojeti:
You are certainly entitled to privacy. Perhaps you can inquire about the phone support services that some medical plans are requiring of their diabetic patients. These are monthly or less calls from a specialist (nurse, not sure about RD) who reinforce good habits. However, just like the RDs who preach out of the ADA songbook, they can be wrong about loading up on carbs. Good luck to you.

At this point, I don't feel like I need any other guidance and I would rebel against someone trying to "reinforce good habits". I would feel like they were condesending. I never have done well with someone trying to tell me what to do...LOL. BTW, our insurance has nurses calling sometimes wanting to coach...I have fun with them...I don't think they like me
