Hi all, just a question. Do you get the yearly flu shot? Since my son was diagnosed, his doctor recommended that he gets the flu vaccine. Does it help?

Hard to know - if you don't get the flu, I guess it works or else you weren't exposed to that specific strain, eh? OWC and I both got it and neither of us had any ill effects - not even a sore arm. Nor have we gotten the flu, but then we don't get out much, so are rarely exposed.

Yes I do, and so does the rest of my family. This includes my 4 year old and 8 year old grandsons.

Only time I ever got the flu shot was when I was forced by the military. Other than those years I've never had one. And don't plan on starting

Yes, I've been getting it for years. My employer offered it free to us and since being diagnosed and retired I receive it free from my clinic. My doc also advised that I get the pneumonia shot this year as well, which I did.

I have never had the flu since getting the shots and I have had no side effects from them.

Twice in my life, I've had a flu shot... and twice, I was sick afterwards. The second time, it made me sick enough to miss three days of work; the sick-day policy where I worked at the time was, "You don't work, you don't get paid." My doctor at the time suggested that since I seem to react badly to flu shots, I should forgo them in the future. That was in 1992.

Last time I had the flu was sometime in the later part of the 1990's...

My wife had a flu shot this year, as did I, and she got sick with the flu anyway. I did not get sick, and can only assume that I already had immunity from a previous illness and not from the shot.

Thanks for all the responses...I think I'm going to get him (and the whole family) the yearly flu shot. Anything that could help him not get too sick in the future is always a good thing.

I do not get the flu shot only because it only covers the most popular strain for that year. You can still get the flu even if you get a shot, but you probably won't get it as bad as if you had the shot. Also, you are still susceptible to all the other strains out there, plus all the viruses that are floating around. As I get older, my mind might change on that, but for now, I do not get it.
