Default Insulin Cost just skyrocketed for me

I went to the pharmacy to get my Humalog and they wanted $300 copay, about 200% higher then last time.

I'm sort of freaking, as I have two different insulins, putting me at about $600 a month. I can't pay that.

I've heard that Walmart sells a OTC insulin for $25 a bottle. But the pharm-tech said it was "different" then the insulin I normally use and that I couldn't interchange them.

Can anyone provide insight into this? If you can get insulin for $25 a bottle from Walmart, why are we paying $300 a bottle for brand name insulin?

The difference is on peaks and how long they last. The humulin regular they sell has a lack time from the rapids. The humulin N is an intermediate acting last about 8 to 12 hours and has a bigger peak. With your doctor you could design a schedule were you could make it work. You will need to test often to see if you can match your present regimen. There are also plans that the manufacturers of insulin provide that if you qualify they provide a discount. That is another possibility you can explore.

You might check with your insurer to see if they're still covering Humalog. Could be you're paying the full price because Humalog is no longer in their formulary.

Still outrageous, though. Last I checked, which was about a year ago, a vial of Humalog was selling retail for $150/vial.
