Are these ok for those with diabetes and pre-diabetes to drink?

You mean drink one and then test with the meter?

Yes, you need to have one and then test to see if your blood sugar has increased.

Unfortunately you can't trust the Nutrition Facts as there is pretty wide variance in their accuracy.

I've found Polar brand to be safe for me with no notable increase, but every few years I'll retest in case ingredients have changed, etc., or for sure if I feel like I notice an upswing.

Ok, I had a small glass with dinner. I did not drink it by itself and test. My one hour postprandial was 95. My two hour postprandial was 90. Does this mean I can safely have the one glass of this sparkling flavored water beverage with dinner? I don't plan on drinking lots of the stuff....just a small glass with dinner sometimes.

That's awesome, OD. Especially as I think I saw another post from you saying you're relatively recently diagnosed, 90 is great (in my opinion).

I'd have tested sooner afterward, too, and without a meal to reduce variables. Carb sugars hit your blood stream pretty quickly. It depends on whether/when/how much insulin you took, etc.

I drink them all the time (at least the ones here in Sweden that have 0 carbs). There is only water and flavour essence as ingredients. However, when we were in Edinburgh, Scotland last year, we bought some bottled water and it actually contained sugar! So you do need to read the ingredients carefully. These days I make my own with my Sodastream so I know exactly what is going into my water.

It's a learning curve. It took a lot of school of hard knocks experiences but these days when I consider a new food from the grocery:
  • I read the label and the ingredients (I can handle a small amount of sugar, but any fructose, HFCS = a huge BG spike for me)
  • I test it in isolation (no other food and on an empty tummy)
  • I test at 30 minute intervals (yes, at first I went through a lot of test strips - I use the Relion Prime because the test strips are inexpensive. It gets better as the approved foods list grows.)

I learned a lot about what my body can and cannot handle that way.

I always carry my testing kit with me. When eating out I hit the ladies' room to test several times after dining. I am gradually building a list of restaurant meals I can eat...but I still test at least at 1 and 2 hours pp just in case they changed their ingredients.

The part I like about all this is, I have so much more control over my own health than I did pre-DX.
