Talking Variations in Pre-Meal Insulin Injection Times

I was wondering if any of you have heard that the lower your pre meal glucose test number is, the less time you should wait before eating following the injection???

I came across this info in the Diabetes Self-Management, January/Februay 2011 issue, page 34. I've been working with the time limits from the chart, and so far, so good!

Does anyone else use this kind of time range?

Of course, I don't recommend this for anyone on the forum. I was just curious, and interested in knowing other opinions about this information.

Have blessed day, healthy life, and success in managing your diabetes.

hi Pastor Paul
Well my endo here tells me that quick acting insulins should be taken right on when you're going to eat and no longer than 10 mins before. So personally I take it right on when I'm going to take my first mouthful. Also he tells me if I forget to take it before the meal, I must take it within half an hour from when I've eaten. I haven't heard anything different than that.

Even the fastest acting insulins are only beginning to work within 15 minutes of injection, and they last in your system for four to six hours. I try to pre-bolus at least 15 minutes (usually twenty or thirty) before eating. In fact, for me boluses work best if I do 2/3 of the insulin before eating and the rest about thirty minutes after starting a meal. My normal bolus is 2 to 3 units of Novolog (including tiny corrections for higher-than-desired pre-meal blood sugar readings), so I guess I'd disagree with the timing recommendation you found.
