Cool Had my follow-up with my Endo this week!

Hey everybody!

I saw my Endocrinologist on Tuesday for a follow-up, and results of bloodwork I had done on March 6th-- and I guess I'm doing things right! ALL of my 'bad' numbers have improved drastically! I have lost 15 pounds since Christmas, and my new A1C is 7. My doc said I can test my bg only two times a day now, too. He still kind of wanted to put me on a cholesterol medication, but I really don't want any more meds. He said as an alternative, I can take Niacin which should both lower bad cholesterol and help raise good cholesterol --has anyone else heard of or tried this?

He said as I am right now, my Diabetes is almost 'gone'. He also of course said if I ever give up my low-carb ways, I'll be right back where I started, but no worries there--I have no intention of that. My blood results also showed my Insulin was high.. being that I'm resistant, he explained even though it's there, my body doesn't know what to do with it. He basically said this means Metformin for life for me, but I think I'm ok with that. He told me to keep doing what I'm doing, and come back in three months. Now I have to see what my liver docs say on Monday. I'm guessing since I lost some weight, my fatty liver has to have improved as well. I'll find out soon enough (fingers crossed!)

Thanks for 'listening'!

Awesome and hysterically enthusiastic applause!!
Niacin? Hmm, I'll have to research that. Mebbie I can use that on my doc when he tries to inflict statins upon me...

When you're using LCHF, you don't need statins and it's prob'ly doubtful you need niacin either.

From a quick scan (yes I read quickly and spend a lot of time on Medscape, etc.), there is a lot of controversy over the use of Niacin, not because it doesn't work with cholesterol control, but because it "doesn't reduce the risk of heart disease". No surprise there.

There are risks with too much Niacin though, most of which seem to be liver related. If you end up deciding to use it ask your liver doc about his ideas about it.

Shanny knows about LCHF, as do multiple others on this forum, and the conclusion of the experienced means an awful lot to me.

Just some things to think about. =)

So happy for you Peaceful..
I added Niacin to my vit//min regimine when I started LCHF, on the advice of a Holistic friend of mine.. it cant hurt and it might help , especially since the doc suggested it as an alternative to more meds..

I wish you good health and more positive reports..

Thanks everyone!

Even my Endo did say ask my liver docs about the Niacin, and I will, but as Shanny mentioned, if I won't even need it that's even better. I think giving LCHF more time to work, maybe I'll be in normal range the next time. I mean heck, I came down from somewhere in the 300's to 140, so I think there's a great chance of that!

So I just got thru seeing my liver docs, and it was awesome! My surgeon almost fell over when he saw me (I lost 17 pounds, but I didn't think it was that drastic), and said he called down to Radiology to make sure they sent him the right test lol! He told me my fatty liver went from 32% back in September to only 8% now! He said that's almost in normal range. The only thing I didn't like is my cholesterol. Because of my condition with my liver, plus Diabetes, they want it to be 70, and I'm still at 140. They are giving me another 3 months to try on my own, or I'll need to go on a statin. So, I will be giving the Niacin a try to see if that will help. Even so, I got good news, so I'm doing my happy dance. .whoo hoo!

Good news, congratulations! Keep up the good work!..

One thing to remember, as you lose weight, your triglycerides go up temporarily. But if you stay LCHF, they will go down.

Peaceful75, are you a 50 year old male that has already had a heart attack? If not, statins are not proven to be necessary, especially with risk vs benefit. If so, need is still questionable, and you might want to do more research instead of just taking your doctor's word it would be beneficial.

mbuster.....LIKE, LIKE, LIKE (can't hit the like button more than once) but what you posted was dead on. Unfortunately there are too many docs out there that don't know that
