Have you made any changes in the way you eat - specifically, have you greatly reduced the amount of carbohydrates you eat?

I think I can tell you why you need to take berberine before you eat. It stimulates your pancreas to secrete insulin. There is the hope that if you delay eating that your digested carbs (which are digested very quickly) will meet the insulin and your BG will not rise. However, it's not an exact science - so many factors effect the timing. If your pancreas is late in meeting the carbs, your BG may initially rise but then plunge low. One has to be very diligent in testing when taking this kind of powerful drug.

You may want to consider that many T2s are able to control their BG through a change in diet - to low-carb/high-fat - so that they are spared any side effects from these drugs (like pancreatitis). (Metformin, however, is safe and has few side effects except for stomach issues which usually clear up in a few weeks).

Actually it works much like metformin does.

Here is Blood Sugar 101 take on it.

I've ordered Berberine and I want to experiment with it. No, it doesn't replace lchf, but if it can help get me slightly lower and help with cholesterol, it could be a good thing. I was on Metformin for 6 months and I've been off it for three months. For some reason, I prefer a supplement to a pharmaceutical drug. I'll see how it goes. I'm curious if anyone else has tried Berberine.

I would think if it was something that was a real benefit, many here would be taking berberine and talking it up. The silence has been deafening.

Oh it works, dh gave me one pill, but honestly right now I'm scared to take it. Me and medications don't get long. You can call vitamins and supplements medication that haven't been through FDA inspection and no clinical trials that may tell us it's safe. Since these medications fall into the category of, don't know where it comes from, what it's cut with, safe dosages and what side effects it may cause. There is no regulatory process for supplements so I typically run away from them. There are a few I will take though, but only ones that I know have been around for years, and I 99%convince it won't hurt me.

Dave,

I will merely say that the page makes great play amongst other things of the 'hundreds of studies' supporting the product. I'd be more impressed if they actually cited a couple.
