Default ReliOn A1c test vs. Lab test

A while back when I was at Walmart I noticed that they now have an A1c at home test kit which is the same as the Bayer A1c now test kit. I mean it is the same kit with the ReliOn name on it. Exact same product down to the instructions which are all identical and at $22 for two tests. I bought one to try out and I had lab work done Monday, 8/10, so I tried the home kit also to compare. The Relion kit showed an A1c of 4.8 so I was pretty happy but I got my lab test report yesterday and it was 5.1 so there is a discrepancy. The difference isn't huge but I wish it was closer however it is a home test kit and probably well within expected range. I just thought some might find it interesting to see the comparison.

You'd see that much error between labs or even tests done within the same lab. I wouldn't sweat it.

I don't place much credence in the number to the right of the decimal.

It wouldn't surprise me if the uncertainty were 0.2 or so.

I've done such comparisons many time. My Bayer kits were always lower just as you've found. But then I have data from the same lab for over 100 people and I know that they do report A1c a bit higher than should be. Either it's a problem of equipment calibration or a deliberate pharma/doctor ploy. Trust is in short supply, money rules. So, I trust the home tests more than the labs. But that's India, your conditions may be different.

That's interesting SKB, that's what I have found using the Bayer kits before also. Actually the Bayer result seems more reasonable judging from my daily testing results for the last few months. My overall numbers have been running much lower the last 3 months and yet the lab test for A1c 6 months ago and now are the same.
Actually I'm not unhappy with either number, I just thought it was an interesting comparison. I also thought people may be interested that Walmart has the Bayer kit rebranded with the Relion name for $22.00 and that's for two tests.
