Default Insulin resistance/Metformin

I have taken Metformin since 2003 in spite of the fact I am Type 1. I also endeavor to follow the LCHF way of eating. Granted I am not perfect but I try. My GP has mentioned several times that one of the side effects of Metformin in addition to the intestinal issues can be muscle pain. Has anyone on this board noticed this to be true?

My experience is that statins caused my muscle pain. Have never had problems with metformin, but I dumped the statin and have never looked back.

Are you on any statins and which one? I have been moved to another statin that is not known for causing muscle pain. My VA provider made the change because my PCP would not. He just feels that I am fabricating the pain. The one I was on was known for causing muscle pain.

Not on statins as I had severe myopathy on literally every one they tried. I have no knowledge of the long term effects of statins or if myopathy tends to hang around in the body. How rude of the doctor to think you are fabricating the pain, makes you want to hand the pain to him to bear for a while. Too bad we can't do that.

88 this am. I had labwork to prove the statins was causing me damage. The statins causes a disease that can destroy your kidneys, and they still insisted I take them. I think I got the message cross though, went to the doctor yesterday and no mention of taking that statin.

Do you recall the name of the disease that can destroy the kidneys? What lab tests did they do to find out the statins were causing you damage? Honestly, I feel sad that you have had to endure that statin pain.

In the part of the country where I live, the drug mfg are running ad after ad on the evening television trying to convince people that statins are for everyone including children (to prevent cardiac disease).

It's called Rhabdomyolysis. As most ppl know here I had an heart attack back in April of this year. They test enzymes to see what kind of damage (if any) has been done. When you have a heart attack your ck's, and tropinon gets elevated. After 3 days those levels are back down. They also run a ck-MB which designates heart muscle damage.

After the 72 hours in the hospital, those enzymes went down like they were supposed to, but on the 4th day they were off the chart again. The doctor asked me what I thought it was since the test didn't indicated heart muscle damage. They had put me back on the statins and I had fought so many issued with diabetes management that I thought I would just take it until I leave the hospital. So I told the doctor it's those damn statins ya'll are killing me with. I did have kidney failure but the docs thought that was from the angiogram I had. Anyway the cardiologist said he never saw that before and told me he thought I was right, so he didn't push me much to try to take it again. The other doctor's pretty much say take it, without even looking up the information. It's a common side effect and every doctor should know.

Statins not only cause muscle pain, I had weakness all over and alzheimer's like symptoms. I called that brain fog. I even had an MRI to rule out things there.

Statins also raise blood sugar-so all of us diabetics should be taking them, right? To prevent the heart disease we don't have? Especially us women for whom they have not shown to prevent anything. And men who have not had a CVD event, ditto.
