Over the last few months I have been expanding my crafty repertoire into making boxes. Decorative boxes and slip cases for my handmade books. It's a learning curve and I think I've got it figured out how to make a well-made box with square corners and smooth joins. I have a book I've been working on a slip cover for - a really thick book with old lace and buttons and postcards on the pages. It has taken three tries to get the box just right (I'm a perfectionist!) but this morning I put the last pieces together and it fits "just right"!

My intent is to eventually sell some specialty boxes through Etsy. But it'll take several months to bring my skill level up to my personal high standards, and then to get an inventory. But it's all fun. And using beautiful handmade papers to cover the boxes (and books) makes them special.

My sister-in-law made me custom papered boxes last year for my birthday. They are so nice that I don't use them for storage and just display them on my bookshelf.

I have patios off all my rooms with great big sliders. Here on the Central Coast of CA we don't have many annoying insects or flies, so the screens on those sliders can be open for hours at a time as I'm always going out to water, hang, or whatever. Open the doors in Spring and generally don't close them until late Fall (Nov - or in this case today because it was cold!) when it gets cooler. We don't have/need A/C here.

Anyway, lately I've been doing a lot of therapeutic gardening and the patios have a ton of flowering plants. The hummers love them of course, and I also have a few feeders.

This morning I go out into the living room and hear a subtle banging. I look up and at a big window about 15' up - above the patio sliding door - is a hummer. Deranged I thought - the hummer is trying to get inside? Oh ... it's trying to get out! What the ... ?

I had no recall when the sliding screens had been open or closed but went around opening all of them as I was clueless which one it came in or where it would go in an attempt to get out. The hummer took a rest up on the chain that the dining room lamp is hanging from. Wish I'd thought to get a pic!

Finally, the little guy figured out how to escape. The only thing I could figure is that it came in to explore the flowering plant on the dining room table, then got trapped.

And here I thought screens were about flies, moths and bees ...

Well, I finally got out the camera and took pictures of one of my boxes. The medallion on the top is done with paper quilling.

VeeJay - that's awesome! I had to google 'paper quilling' - and learned a lot:

1. It has been around for 100's of years
2. It's very intricate
3. You're loaded with patience (and skill)

@VeeJay, that looks amazing! Got any plans for how to use it?
