Default How do you handle temptations?

Most of the time I can pass up the high-carb foods, but now and then I just WANT something from the past. I may not even be hungry, or craving carbs. Sometimes I can get beyond this, but other times I try to limit to one bite, which, of course, turns into several.

I've tried eating something very high fat. Nope - doesn't stop the little voice saying how much I miss _____. About the only thing that helps for me is to leave the house and do something non-food-related.

How do you handle this kind of temptation?

I rationalize it as minimal and cave in...then feel guilty for the rest of the day.

Works for me!

I'm no help. My first temptation occured last night. It wasn't even about the food, it was about money and convenience. My kids love Cane's Chicken Fingers. We used to eat there once a week. I don't eat there anymore but I will still go through the drive-thru and buy them each a kid's meal. Well, last night I had a coupon for a free combo meal. I was so tempted to eat it. Because it was free. I decided that was a stupid reason to tempt fate. I'm afraid that if I take one bite of the wrong food I will be right back at square one dealing with cravings with a white-knuckle version of willpower that always results in an out-of-control binge and usually giving up on taking care of myself.

i've said this before about myself.

I consider that I have an allergy to carbs. Cant have them because I'm allergic. so since I have thoroughly convinced myself I do not have the cravings.

no temptation for me at all

I applaud your efforts to restrain. It is easy to veer a little off path and probably harmless. One bite is not bad, but sometimes that leads to two, and three, then four..... When I decided to cut carbs, I cut carbs. I had a can of tuna fish and a tossed salad for Thanksgiving that year. Big family get together, lots, and lots, and lots of tempting foods. Everything was out of bounds for the carb limit I set for myself except the baked ham, then they covered it with a pineapple sauce.

I had found that the longer I'd been low carb, the less things had been tempting, so it does get better. Like hftmrock, I am not tempted by anything anymore, 'cept bacon.

Wait! What? I thought bacon was all-you-can-eat?

It is all you can eat, I am always tempted by bacon and usually don't resist. That's not a bad temptation, but does it mean I have some sort of deficiency?

I'm still trying to figure this out! I seem to be an all or nothing kinda gal and I haven't figured out the moderation part.

I think a big part of my problem is my history of using food for way more than just sustenance. Something to celebrate? Let's eat! Feeling blue? Definitely let's eat...

So. I'll just keep plugging away until I get it (and hopefully don't lose a foot or my eyesight first..groan).

Me too! And, for something to do when I'm bored.

Lots of baggage to overcome. And I've done so very well up until recently -- 6+ years into LCHF and 4 before that of gluten-free. I think I'm just tired to having to monitor my eating so closely.

Yes, the monitoring - it is tiring, absolutely. I feel like Professor Moody from Harry Potter: "Constant vigilance!"

VeeJay, I am impressed - I can't seem to get on track for more than a month or so. It sounds like you have a good plan to mitigate the temptation.
