I was born and grew up in New York right near West Point. I met my husband in 1976, we had grown up 10 miles apart but never knew each other. We have been married for 35 years. We lived in New Jersey for awhile right after we got married. He was doing a PhD at Rutgers and I was teaching Special Ed in Tom's River NJ. It all changed when we had our first son in 1978, so I quit my job and he quit his PhD program and just took his M A degree. He had to go into the real world and work and forget about being a Professor. He got a job in New York City and communted 1.5 hours each way to work on the bus. We then moved to Northern Virginia and he worked in Washington DC for 8 years. We then got transferred to Ohio and have raised our 5 kids here. They are now all grown. Only one married and I would love to be a grandma someday. I was a stay at home mom most of my life but wished I had stuck with the teaching. We own our own business and are saving for retirement. I love tennis and gardening.

Born & raised in the Nebraska Sandhills. Spent my first 21 years in Nebraska. But marriage & children came along, and we followed the job market to Colorado where I spent another 21 years, raised my kids, divorced my husband, met the old woodchopper, eventually married him, and moved to Missouri where I've now lived for 25 years, and expect to live out my life.

An accountant by training, I took off ten years to work in school food service while the kids were in school, so my schedule would match their schedules for vacations, holidays, etc. Even in those days, daycare was a budget breaker, and I didn't want anyone else raising my kids anyhow! Once they were launched, I returned to my bookkeeping roots . . . taking over as admin asst. for a large suburban church, setting up a new inhouse bookkeeping system for them (as opposed to a church treasurer who just kept the checkbook at home) and staying with that until the move to Missouri. Once we got settled in Missouri, I got in with a local bank & that's when I learned about computers. I was keeping accounts with computers (like the IBM AS400 - state-of-the-art back then! lol) long before I was ever introduced to PCs, and online communications.

But as time went on, OWC seemed to be failing, and I worried at his depression and other issues - thinking that if these were the best years of our lives, I didn't want to be rushing off to a job every day and leaving him home alone. So we scrapped the financial plan & I retired. Best decision I ever made. It's been fifteen years since then, and yeah - we've had our backs against the wall a time or two, but we also managed to pay off the house, as that original financial plan stipulated, and we've had the time to enjoy each other & the lovely restful environment we've found here. As Clebo says: Life is good.

Me next!

I am a 49 y/o woman (big 5 - 0 this September) and have been with my hubby for 28 years, married for 22 years this June. We have two daughters, Maria who is 20 y/o and away at college studying psychology, and Kelly who is 17 y/o and a Junior in High School. I was born and raised in suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio and still live approximately 8 miles from Lake Erie. I am the middle daughter of three girls, and my sisters and I are very close. My Dad is still alive at 74 y/o, and my Mom passed away almost 7 years ago from end stage renal failure, due to diabetes. My 90 y/o mother in law lives with us and I have two big black labs, Tinker and Belle, who are my "little" babies (Tinker is 80 lbs and Belle is 100 lbs). They are sisters/litter mates. I was first diagnosed with gestational diabetes 7-1/2 months into my first pregnancy, and the rest as they say is history (with the diabetes anyway). I have always been in the secretarial field since high school, mostly at medical places. I went back to school and became a certified medical billing specialist in my early 40's. I am now the Office Manager/Medical Billing Specialist for a Neuropsychologist on the east side of Cleveland. I enjoy my job, and I love working with numbers. I have been with my current employer for the past 7-1/2 years.

Finding this forum literally saved my life, and I don't feel so isolated and alone anymore with this disease. I am just now beginning to understand it better, and how to work it better. I love all the people I've met here and hope we all have long healthy lives. Perhaps one day we can have a big Diabetes Forum Gathering in a neutral place for everyone to come together and finally meet in person.

That's pretty much it! Who wants to go next?

My MIL is like 58y/o and she lives with us since June2011. She lived in MS but fell off a porch and shattered her left knee and also her right ankle so now she is here. Hubby found out this past Nov he is T2 also his mom found out a few months before hubby she is also T2. I managed a small town cafe for many years but have not worked since the grand baby was born. I was born in a place called Dehradun in Northern India, but I've spent most of life travelling because my father was in the Army and kept getting transferred every year or so. (He just retired as a 3 star general). Because of frequent transfers , in the 12 years of schooling (up untill college) I changed cities 12 times. I am a Computer Science Engineer and a MBA (strategy) by education. After undergrad and post grad courses in Delhi I moved to Bangalore and then Germany (Frankfurt) for a while. I am now back at home in Delhi. Nothing like being at home. Home is where the heart is. I met my wife during college in 2005 and we have been together ever since. We got married in Dec 2008 and are expecting our first child this September...

I am 30 years old now and work as a management consultant. Travelling is still a big part of my life though I have not traveled much for the last 12 months. I really want to quit my job and start something of my own but the mortgage I have on my head (for my house) has made me a slave for the company I work for.......

Sorry, posting from my phone and got a call. It posted before I was finished.

So I currently live in Phoenix. I am a program manager for the logic division of a large semiconductor company. Well, actually, I have taken a step back while I get my health in order so I am training a new project leader at the moment so technically not a PM anymore but health before wealth is my new motto. I don't really like what I do anymore so I am entertaining ideas of finally starting my own business.

I was diagnosed in October and had quite the downward spiral. With the help of the wonderful folks on this site, I was able to regain control and stay out of the wall.

Ok, carry on.

Marsha deserves special kudos for this thread.

I was born (1958) & live in Mumbai, India. Academically i'm a Chemistry Honours student & trained in printing technology, but I switched professions a number of times till I wound up in the construction industry as a turn-key contractor. Since 2005 I've started as a realtor on my own, and still consider myself a struggler due to market volatility.

I'm married (and separated) have 2 kids. A married daughter who lives in Budapest & a son who is still pursuing his IT/Management degree. I call myself a hobbies man, as I do more extra curricular work than the strictly professional. I'm a pistol shooter & a coach for the state I live in, an avid wild life photographer, keen enthusiast of urdu poetry, love farming and horticulture and now want to obtain a certificate/diploma in nutrition so that I can teach people what I learnt on these forums.

I'm 29 years old, born in the Bay Area (California). My mother is from California and my father is from New Jersey, so I spent my childhood years in both states. After my parents' separation at age 8, my mother and I moved to California and that's where I lived until a few years ago.

I live with my partner of 11 years. We met in college; he's from St. Louis originally. No children, but we do have a cat that's almost as emotionally needy as any child. I work in educational services and he's in his second year of law school here in Chicago. He has a summer job at a law firm and plans to go into tax law.

In my private time, I enjoy reading horror novels and being an amateur genealogist. My great-grandmother was a published genealogist and that's what first got me interested. Right now I'm working on researching my father's Italian-American roots.

Keep 'em coming!
