This site loads slower than any other site I've EVER been on. It takes at least 75 seconds to fully load while it's trying to connect (transferring/waiting for/connecting) with all its "cookies". 195 of them...to be exact. Really...195? And my download speed is 140Mb per second. Please...:frusty:

#2 ·
Hmm. I'm not seeing that it's much slower than other sites I'm loading (Facebook, twitter, local news, Web email). And my NoScript Firefox extension reports only (!) 30 sites that want to run scripts and Privacy Badger only (!!) six trackers. 195 seems excessive -- like something else is running on your system.

The standard advice -- log out, clear cookies, restart browser,... Have you tried that?

Not my first rodeo with computers or browsers. I use a program called CCleaner. It reports loaded cookies. Trust me...I know how this works. I cleared all the cookies with my browser closed, opened the browser then clicked on DiabetesForum. I then opened up CCleaner and checked the loaded cookies. 195. You can download CCleaner for free yourself and take that out for a test drive.

CCleaner

As an addendum here...I'm also a member of two other highly popular diabetes forums. Each of them only loads five cookies. FIVE!

I know that sites subscribe to cookies to pay the bills...but please...195? Somebody's got a yacht they're paying for!

Bounty, I performance-tested Web sites for several years. I have a few ideas, too. :smile2:

All I can tell you at this point is that a Mac running High Sierra and Firefox 57.0.4 with lots of script-killers and Privacy Badger, running through Comcast broadband (58.7 Mbps right now), isn't having any problems loading this Web site. My tracert traffic is taking less than a second.

Not denying that this site may seem slow to you but it certainly doesn't seem slow from here. Then again, it sounds like there are a few differences in our computer configurations. Sounds like additional data points are needed.

#6 ·
A ping directly to lijit times out for me right now, but I don't see them on my tracert. Since I'm not loading their code to get to this site, it's not an issue for me.

Don't know what else to say, Bounty. I still don't know why so many cookies seem to be loading on your browser. I'm sure some are so they can keep the lights on here but I agree that 195 is an excessive number.

I also have not seen any other posters mentioning similar page-loading issues. I guess we'll just have to keep an eye out to see if the issue spreads.

I have the same problem at home using Chrome - As a result I access the forums from work most of the time as the network firewall seems to block a lot of the scripts. At work it takes about 10 seconds with Google Chrome and at home it takes about 7 minutes to fully load and my system at home is just chugging when that happens. I have high speed in both places and don't have any issues loading other intense script sites be it SoundCloud, Facebook or any of the video or audio streaming sites I visit.
So ... that's why I'm seldom on over the weekends. I may try different browsers to see if it makes a difference at home but like Bounty - there seems to be a lot going on when I log in from home.

#9 ·
OMG...I thought I was the only one! I keep this site open throughout my workday. I post during breaks. I usually don't post on weekends because it's so sloooooow! I'm not computer savy at all. It took me a while to figure out what cookies were ! Many of the websites I access at home have so many ads and stuff. It takes forever to load. If there was a way (and maybe there is) to forgo all that extra loading for a fee, I would consider paying it :smile2:.

Have a great day!

Hey @Bounty,

When you see the site hanging up on on ce.lijit.com whether it says Waiting for or Transferring from, do you notice what time of day this occurs? Is it consistent? Please let us know the time of these occurrences including the timezone.

Also, what device/browser are you using? Does this appear across the whole site or just on certain pages? Please link us the URLs if this only occurs on certain pages. Does this persist if you try on another device and/or browser?

Everyone else experiencing the site slowness, please provide the same info as well:

- device/browser
- time of occurrence including timezone
- confirm if you see "ce.lijit.com" in the bottom left corner of your browser during the slowdown or what else it says if it's hanging onto that (these normally should be speeding through quickly)
- same behavior when attempted on a different browser and/or device?

Could you guys also confirm if clearing your cache/cookies and refreshing your browser does anything for you at all or it continues - thank you so much for your cooperation on this.

Cheers,
Nate

Yes. I usually log in around 11:30 PST

Is it consistent?
Very.

Also, what device/browser are you using?
Dell Optiplex PC Desktop Windows 7 Pro; Firefox ver. 46.0.1 using AdBlocker Ultimate.

Does this appear across the whole site or just on certain pages?
All I'm tracking is the initial loading of the site. I clear cookies every night so I get a reload each day. I do not clear my active logins so I'm already logged in when I click this bookmark.

EDIT: Clicking through the site to New Posts I find the site takes about 40 seconds of more cookie loading as well as data transfers. The user interface loads the screen...but I can see in the lower left of my screen things still loading onto my computer.

Please link us the URLs if this only occurs on certain pages.
http://www.diabetesforum.com/forum.php

Does this persist if you try on another device and/or browser?
I get the same cookies with Chrome Version 63.0.3239.132 (32-bit) as I do with Firefox. I don't use IE or any other device.

As an addendum here; Not sure what your comment character-count limit is...but I've spent the last 45 minutes with CCleaner rounding up the list of cookies this site loads. Load time is 80 seconds, which includes data transfers. This is with a current download bandwidth speed test of 83.04 Mbps from New York to California. Here's the list. If the list is too long I'll try and add an attached .txt file of the list.

I'm assuming that this list is an added-to list being so long. In other words...maybe no one has ever checked to see if any of your cookie sources on this list are still active paying-clients.

Regarding Devices: I have an Alcatel One Touch phone powered by Android that I turn on at night in case I get email. Last night I got a notification that Patches had posted to this thread. I clicked on the link and in the process of trying to scroll to that comment my mobile Chrome browser crashed...twice. It's never done that on any other site.

That's an awful lot of cookies... I just checked my cookie settings (I use chrome, go here for instructions on how to check your cookies: https://kb.iu.edu/d/ajfi) and I only have a total of 19 from navigating this site. One showed 11 and the other showed 8, here's the 11:

It sounds like the problem is on your end - could do a malware check on your computer? Run CCleaner too. Let us know how that goes!

Thanks,
Nate

@ForumAdmin

I've changed my FF cookie settings from Accept Third Party Cookies: Always...to Accept Third Party Cookies: Never.

I'm now down to a 3% load of cookies and a 65% less load time at login. Not sure how that'll effect other sites...but we'll take this a step at a time. I remember one site, awhile back, that wouldn't let me on unless I accepted all cookies. I think that's when I changed my cookie settings.

Thanks for your input on this. :thumb:

Good to see that!

FWIW I keep two browsers open. Firefox is buttoned down pretty tight; Safari is pretty much as-installed. That's in case I run across a site where maybe I just to look at something quickly and don't want to undo the restrictions I've built into Firefox. On this site I've granted permissions to diabetesforum.com, verticalscope.com, and googleapis.com. No problems doing anything here with that set of permissions.

Seems to be a little better for me today. Although I do get lags like right now, I'm typing and I don't see my letters -there they are ... Google Chrome keeps popping up a warning window "Page Unresponsive - wait or leave page.

I get the sense there is a lot processing going on.

i noticed today i reply to a post and type 3 lines into the box, my CPU usage goes from 25% to 90% and i am unable to type as it locks up. I have to exit and renter the forum. I have no other apps running and do not recall this happening on another site. i use chrome with Windows 10. my memory has about 65% remaining. most days i can type freely without losing cpu

Another testimonial.

I noticed, trying to navigate this site, the constant "waiting for" "transferring data" "reading" "connecting to" "looking up"...and a lag in typing. It still loads over 150 cookies. After a polite "it must be you" I've taken this site off my bookmarks. I came back because it seems I'm still subscribed to this thread for comment notifications.

Take care! :vs_cool:

i dont have problems at all. And I typically use 3 different PCs, 2 android phones, and a Samsung Tab 3. Im using firefox, chrome, samsung internet, windows 10, windows 7, my work computer is a super new computer, and my home computer is almost 10 years old. my IP providers are different. I don't have any special security software.mcaffee security on my PCs and nothing on my mobile devices.

Sorry I am not experiencing any problems at all.

#25 ·
I wonder if certain IPs provide services instantly filter out a lot of things that we are not aware of and other IPs just let everything come thru.

#26 ·
I've been accessing the site from home and it seems to be a little faster than before but my CPU fan always starts up when I'm on the site so something is going on - at work where I am now - no heavy duty processing - It must be the firewall blocking something thus preventing CPU usage percentages to peak..

Sorry to revive a 3 month old conversation, but unfortunately a lot of sites now have ads all over them in order to pay the bills. I get it, it's a necessary evil in today's electronic virtual world.

At the risk of getting into trouble for saying this, about a year ago I started using ad blockers. Yes, sites hate it but a web site shouldn't take 30 seconds to load due to all the back end cookies and ads.

If you want me to stop using ad blockers, then give me a subscription option that removes all ads.

Ok, sorry.....getting down off my soapbox now.

I'm not computer savvy, and the only cookies I'm familiar with are the ones I can no longer eat :)

I noticed that I cannot access this forum using IE anymore. I thought maybe it was just my PC at work, but it's at home too. I can use Google at home, but I don't have it here at work...GRRR!

I am using Chrome, and last week the page rendering was a wreck. The header appeared as a list, as noted by you, and I was having problems with the site. It has since cleared up, or has been fixed, and things are better now.

#34 ·
I have set the site for compatibility mode and that made no difference. I have been ignoring a message that appears at the bottom of the browser window that states that only secure content is displayed. It gives you the option to display all content and that allows the page to render normally. Looks like Windows 10 does not like something about the markup.

#35 ·
memphismike, when you see the message that only secure content is displayed, are you seeing the rest of the page? I wonder if the issue is that your IE is trying to bring some content to the page from local browser cache that is not SSL to a rendered page that now is SSL. That would spawn the message you see and the lack of content on the page. Clearing cache on your browser likely would fix that.
