Default Diabetes rants 'n' raves

I know diabetes gives us all some things to think about. But every now and then it poses a particular -- umm -- issue or even a blessing that you don't think about till it happens. That's what I'd like to see us put in this thread.

Sadly, I have to start off with a rant.

I'm on a kind-of business trip so I'm eating my meals at restaurants. Trying to be a good little keto-eating boy, I go a non-chain-type local breakfast place and order the build-to-order omelette. Spinach, cheddar cheese, and sausage.

The omelette comes with hash browns. I dutifully (and a little sadly) say "no hash browns", knowing that I likely wouldn't stop at just a forkful. Or two. The person taking the order asks, "What kind of toast do you want with that? White or wheat?" "Um, neither, thanks." Didn't even know toast came with it. The person taking the order offers, "You could have fruit on the side." No, I can't, but thank you.

So the one-item meal is the omelette, either bacon or sausage on the side, hash browns, and toast. I'm having trouble imagining that anyone eats all that in one sitting (I'm not sure I ever could).

And I'm having trouble imagining that by refusing the ingredients and labor associated with providing hash browns and toast, I don't get any break at all on the price of the item. I don't expect much, but maybe 50 cents or a buck on an $11 omelette that's missing two sides?

If i have to travel, go thru airports and hotels, surrounded by rows of restaurants, cafes, and drive thrus, ill resist eating anything that is not what i already eat at home. If i order at restaurant, no matter how matter how much money i have or even if its free thru a company expense acct, i may order a meal but ill only eat 2 pieces of chicken and leave everything else on the plate. Or if i dont like what i see on menu ill leave. Usually i search for a market and select a few things and take back to hotel. Ill bring my own snacks and ignore food at airport. Its easy as i have a built in mechanism to do what is best for my blood sugars and how i feel.

They could have atleast thrown in the coffee for free.

Tonight's dinner was pizza toppings (the dough part, minus about five bites, was tossed) and a green salad with some extras (sunflower seeds, pickled onions) which were difficult to extract. I made sure I took a long walk after dinner.

My problem (well, one of them) is that I still like food and like to eat, so not having to eat only the stuff I make for myself at home holds some attraction. I'll find out with tomorrow's FBG if/how much I overdid it for dinner. Gotta say, though, this meal was worth it even if I could not eat a lot of it.

That would have been nice! Maybe I should have suggested that, though my experience is that the person taking the order rarely is empowered enough to think of that option or to make it happen.

I travel for work and I find that most people have no concept of what contains carbs. So I always take the lead and say Iíll have an omelet only. You can keep the rest. You still pay the same, unfortunately, but it eliminates the temptation. I canít eat just one.

You know - at the moment Diabetes is the least of my problems - this has been a week from hell as far as remembering new passwords - I had to change my Network Password at work, My Work e-mail password and the firewall password and then I came down with a bad case of password confusion and for a while this week had a tough time logging in to the diabetes forums - by the time I'm comfortable with all the new passwords it will be time (work network admin policy) to change them again.
Maybe I should start planning a vacation away from anything that requires a password LOL ........

It was situations like that that drove me to a cloud-based password manager. At this point I don't even know any of my passwords. But the password manager is never far away so I can copy and paste. Can't go back to the old way now...

I used to work in the food industry. If you tell the order taker/waitress/waiter you can only eat certain foods, they will usually understand.

Instead of wasting your money NOT getting the side items, ask if you could switch the regular side items for extra veggies, meat, or cheese.
In this case I would have asked for some link sausage to replace the other sides I couldn't eat.

A lot of "mom and pop" places are usually very lenient when it comes to this, as they want your business. Places that are a chain or company owned usually have to keep to the menu as is.....unless it's a franchise, then sometimes the manager allows exchanges in sides.

You are the customer, don't be afraid to tell them you have dietary restrictions and if certain things can be substituted. It never hurts to ask.

Even though some places may not have A'la Carte on the menu, you can ask for it. This will give you a discount off a plate order.
I've been to a lot of diners, "dives", and truck stops where they will allow you to order A'la Carte, but you have to ask for it.

Yeah, I have several personal emails.....one for legal, one for friends, one for general use, one for job hunting, one for signing up for stuff online (when a site requires you to sign up to look at their site).

I also have one for bills, one for online commentaries, one for social media, and one for anything else that might popup where I don't want to use my general email.

Needless to say I have LOTS of passwords. But they are all manageable. I use a base password and only change it slightly for each email. So lets say "IluvOnionz4.0" is my base password. I will change the "4.0" to "5.0" for another email address, and maybe put a an underscore in there instead of a period on the next one. So they are pretty much all the same, with slight differences. Differences I can remember.

I also keep them written down in a small notebook that only I know where it is at all times. And I put my passwords in the notebook BACKWARDS, so in case anybody does find it or I lose it, nobody is going to be able to get in because they are all written down backwards.

Luckily, at my job, all of our programs are linked and all run off the same password.....but we have to change it every 90 days or so.
