Thinking about the receptionist's reaction, and what these terms might convey...

"I have diabetes" is something similar to "I have a cold". A passive way of describing the condition and leaves an unspoken idea of getting over it someday.

"I am diabetic" can be thought of as defining the person - something permanent. An unwanted label.

Not that I think this way, but in a society that tends to blame the individual for being diabetic, "having" it may sound less shameful.

Heck i just say the marriage between my beta cells and alpha cells resulted in divorce. As a result, my alpha cells have a broken heart on the absence of his long and one time close partner. In other words I have CCD "Chronic Cupids Deficiency"
