What's holding you back from doing the things you want to do?

What are you waiting for?

I've been thinking about this since you posted it, Cricket. It's a really big question. How much time ya got?

Seriously, I think the answer is fairly complex and yet I'm willing to guess that most of us would provide the same answers:
  • time -- especially existing commitments to loved ones or to work
  • to some extent, diabetes -- it makes it more complicated to be flexible about time, location, activity, etc.
  • money, though at my age, it's not so much current income as wondering how long (and how much) we'll need it over the next 10-40 years
  • age (I can't do everything I used to do when I was 25 or even 40), which, in turn, can sponsor changes like driving at night or where we live or how much we pay someone else to do what we do ourselves now

What am I waiting for? I personally believe that we can always make a different choice, in every circumstance; that none of our lives is preordained. This does, however, run up against reality. When DW retires, time will change significantly. While I can retard the effects of diabetes, I cannot eliminate it. The chances and time I have to make a cool million are pretty much gone -- and who knows if we'll even need it?

That doesn't mean traveling on autopilot into the sunset. But it does mean that "anything is possible" needs to be tempered a little.

I don't think anything is holding me back - I have no idea how long I will live - I could be dead by next week or I could still be live and well in my 90s. What's important to me is to keep doing things that are fun and exciting. So this weekend I'll be going to a 3 night - 2 day music festival, this 56 year old will be dancing in front of the stage along with a bunch of other people that are the same age as my kids LOL

I have been giving it a lot of thought lately - making the most of ones life. 2 weeks ago I received news of two friends who had died. One was 53 and had a heart attack the other was 28 who drowned.

So this weekend I'm going to party like there's no tomorrow - it's a bit tricky with the diabetes but I do this music festival thing every year and my wife has my back :-)
