Remember when stores had real cashiers instead of self service? Well, they still have a few cashiers left (for old fashioned people who still use cash) but they're an endangered group. :o

If I'm in a store like that, I always wait for a live cashier. Maybe if the store gave me a break on the price of goods for performing a service they used to, I'd go self-service. Besides, humans can deal with deviation (bad UPC code, stuff off the discount shelf); so far the machines cannot.

Most of the self serve places where I live are usually large stores like the grocery store or Target. And even at that, there are usually only 4 self check outs, and usually one or two of them aren't working.

I use the self serve registers for small purchases and go through the regular lines with a basket full.

I saw an advertisement once for a new way to shop. It never caught on, but I'm sure it will in the next 10 years they way things are going.........

Some guy walks into a store, grabs a few things and walks right out. As he walks out, the exit door had one of those arch looking devices like at airports.
Apparently is reads the electronic label on the product, and reads whatever payment card you have in your pocket. Just walk in, grab what you want, and walk out.

I've look for this online, but I don't find it. It was an interesting concept.

Amazon's Go cashierless grocery store. Cool concept on the checkout end, but you know they have an idea of every package you took off the shelf and anything you looked at. :surprise:

Considering I'm one of the few people on the planet who hate Amazon, I doubt I will ever set foot in any of their stores.

:wink2:

Hmmm, I'll have to look next time I go in Walmart at their self serve check out to see if when I need a price check, is there a microphone available for me to holler out "Price check self serve aisle 2", and can I punch in my own price.

I'm with you itissteve, someone used to get paid for doing just that. Then I think, someone gets paid to build and maintain those self checkout stations. Then I think, they are still saving money or they wouldn't be implementing that change. That brings me right back to someone used to get paid for doing just that.

Remember when movies were only an hour and a half long? Now it seems many of them are 2 to 3 hours. I can't sit still for that long.

I remember when there was a Garfield the Cat version of cheesy doritos. Were they ever good! That stuff is probably still in my arteries wreaking havoc.
