Default Discounts for "50 and over" - rant

I've found that now I'm 55 I am supposedly eligible for senior discounts.

After researching my metro area for such discounts, I find that it's mostly just small business who give these.

There are restaurants who give them, but of course they have "senior menu's" you have to order from in order to get said discount......which is ludicrous, because most of the stuff on their senior menus, most seniors can't eat (or not supposed to).

As for products and services, they discount on stuff only teens and juveniles would use, not senior citizens. I mean, roller skating and bungee jumping? Seriously???!!!!

AARP SELLS you a card for these discounts, which is idiocy to me, as paying for discounts is like paying a company to shop in their stores.
This is one scam I won't ever be a part of. And on top of that AARP drowns you in spam, e-junk mail of all kinds, as well as stuffing your mailbox full of junk mail you never signed up for.

You'd think in a large metro area, there would be a lot of places that would give you a senior discount that is actually usable and worthwhile to people over 50, but I haven't found any.

I'd like discounts on groceries, meds, shoes, socks, my electric bill, my water bill, and my rent!!! But that will never happen.

The non-chain grocery store down the street from me offers a discount to "seniors" on Wednesdays. Regrettably, I usually don't even have to ask for it. Thrift stores around here do something similar.

Some movie theater chains offer discounts. Hallmark stores can offer seniors a little off. If you carry the Walgreen's loyalty card you can get 20% off. The TJX stores (TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Homegoods, Sierra, etc.) have a 55+ discount depending on the store and location.

Or at least these places did offer breaks. Time, as always, marches on. But, then, so do our ages, and those 65+ get far more discounts than us AARP-qualifying whippersnappers.

Yeah, thats the other hypocritical "perk"...........you ONLY get "discounts" on certain days.

And those days never coincide with any time that I'm off, or have the money to go shopping.

I don't go to movie theaters anymore, too much hassle. Plus, the last handful of times I did go to a theater, there were grotesque and disgusting people in there who either wouldn't shut up, talking on their phones, or doing some kind of loud, nauseating bodily function in a public place. That was over 3 years ago now......and I'm sure it's only gotten worse.

I just wait for the movies to come out on video and stream them online.
