If your doctor didn't give you one (they're free from a doctor's office) then you could ask him for one. The cost is in the strips so it all depends on if they cover them and which brands.

Some manufacturers will send you a free meter, as well.

You could purchase an over-the-counter model from WalMart called Relion Prime, which is the cheapest on the market. $16 for the meter and $9 for 50 strips.

I liked my Freestyle Lite from Abbot, but my insurance now pays out less for these, so I'm using the Relion Prime now and not going through insurance at all.

I did a quick search on this forum for another discussion on meters - of which there are many - and found this lengthy thread that might be of interest to you.

Thank you for the information I'm going to definitely ask my doctor. Being that I don't have insurance I'll probably go with the Walmart brand if she doesn't provide one.

Even if your doc does, as was mentioned earlier, it's the strips that really hurt the wallet. Most meters can be purchased on their own for around $20. Strips can run as high as $65 for a vial of 50. So make sure to check the prices of strips.
