Default Huge Metformin price increase?

I was one of those who simply couldn't take the normal Metformin pills. (I would just sit on the toilet and read for an hour because there was no point on getting up).

The Metformin XR (or ER) 1000mg tablets have worked great for me. (Nearly cut my A1C in half from DX)

The price for the 1000mg XR tablets was $60/month for me, and just went up to $100/month. Is there a reason for this price jump? It annoys me that the 500mg tablets would cost $15/month for me from the exact same pharmacy. I was barely tolerating $60/month, then it jumped $40 in one month. Any ideas?

Sorry, not a US resident but I do recall a few months back a discussion about the disparate costs of the Extended Release 1,000 mg pills when compared to the standard version whilst the 500 mg pill costs were, as they should have been, much the same regardless of version.

Implications are that you'd be taking two smaller pills rather than just the one big one but if the dose is significantly cheaper?

I switched from 1000mg regular to 500mg ER last year, but apparently my doc had gotten the memo, because there was no price conflict. I just have to swallow four horse pills now instead of two.

And it wasn't even that I had side effects . . . I just mentioned to him one day that I took my met, along with all my other meds, all at the same time because I have trouble remembering several different times, and he said if I'm going to be taking the entire dosage at once, I may as well be on ER.

Do you have a Walmart, Target or Kroger/Jewel/Albertson's near you? Their prices for Metformin XR is very low, about $3/month for 60 500mg XR pills.

Walgreen's and CVS also have discounts on that though they are about $15/month.

This is definitely worth shopping around for, and also check if it's cheaper to not go through your insurance.

When I switched to the ER version, I requested the 1000 mg tablets (which I knew almost immediately was a big mistake). Anyway, I couldn't believe how much they cost. So I had them change to the 500 mg (same daily dosage), and that was only $8.00 for 120 tabs (4/day - 2000 mg/day). So perhaps see if you can change to the 500 mg. tabs.

The $100 for 30 pills is from Kroger. Back when the 1000mg XR tablets were just $60, I asked our Walmart and they told me the same price at the time. So for some reason the 1000mg ones are just that much more expensive. I was fine paying $60/month just to take one pill a day, but $100 is something else.

I should add that I'm on Medicare, my Part D insurance costs us $20 a month, and we also have a Missouri citizen assistance program called MoRx, which picks up expenses not covered by the Part D provider.

Between us, we take prob'ly 18-20 prescriptions, yet our costs are always less than $40.

Yes, ask your doc to rewrite your script for the 500 mg. pills. At my clinic, NONE of the docs order the 1000 mg. size because Medicare and half the insurance companies will not pay for it since the 500 mg. is so much less expensive.
