Default Glipizide XL

I was recently put on this medication and I also take 1000 mg of Metiforim 2 times a day. While I see improvement in my BS, I'm not happy with it. My BS were between 250 - 300 while on just metiforim. The first day I took it it with the new meds I got BS between 140 - 160 which is a huge improvement. I was thrilled. The next day, and everyday after that first day, my BS and FBS have been in the low 200s. Does anyone have any insight into why this happened? I don't get it?
Thanks Penny

Glip is a sulfonylurea drug, it makes your pancreas put out more insulin. The problem with that is that it does not care what your BG is and can cause low BG issues if your body does not compensate enough to catch it. That is if your pancreas is capable of putting out more insulin, if its not capable, then it offers nothing but the lovely side effects that can accompany taking it. You can read about the diabetes meds in BloodSugar 101, click on the Meds tab.

Your body has become accustomed to running high BG levels and thinks that is where it should be and tries to regulate at higher levels. As you continue working on doing the things that don't contribute to keeping your BG up, your body will start to lower the level it tries to control. Persistence will eventually pay off.

If you doctor hasn't considered testing you for type 1, maybe bring it up next visit if your numbers aren't responding. You may even need to make an appointment sooner, possibly with an Endocrinologist, if you've made changes to diet and exercise and the BG stays up.

I hated the stuff, and I crashed a lot when taking it. Out of nowhere, BOOM!

And I see by mbuster's post, that there was a reason why:

I haven't taken glipizide in a log time, and I still hate it something awful.
