my first roadblock was food. When i first Dx, I had no education what so ever. here is a test kit, this is how you test. Read these pamplets. done & done.
I hd no idea what to eat. Or not eat. so I ate & cooked what I wanted lol
BG was high.I was in denal. Ignorance is bliss was my motto. Till I had to take myself to the er.Till I found this forum I was so ignorant.

I had 3 docs who didn't do me any favors. I had to learn on my own about the meds they where telling me where safe.About the food I could & should be eating. While my # where not dropping nor my excess weight.
I had to learn on my own what certain food does to your BG & what is sugar & carbs.

I happen to have a love of good food & I love to cook, so that didn't stop me. I just drove in & decided to make the foods I love my way.
Not having rice, breads, wheat, high carb foods went ..
I find it easy to make my fav foods without them.I say if there is a will there is a way..
BTW I think diabetes mags ^ cookbooks are a joke. We do not need them. The people on this forum have come up with great recipes for anything you want.

so my challange was food.

Same roadblock as Carolina. My way of eating drastically changed for the better yet it still meant giving up so many things I loved eating. I tried the APA recommendations at first and they are so stupid I don't even want to think about the damage that prolonged eating that way would cause.

Ok, just having read what Carolina (my new twin) wrote.... erase her name... add mine and that's my answer!

My only road block was what can I eat. Quickly I read and read and tested. Soon, I had read both Dr. Atkins book and Dr. Bernstein's and went on a modified Atkins diet. I soon lost the weight I'd wanted to lose for years and began to eat a few more carbs and found my present carb consumption of between 20-30 daily, some days less and my A1C dropped into the 5 point range which satisfies me and without drugs to aid.

In the early 1960's, I was smitten with the hottest book out there: Calories Don't Count by Herman Taller M.D. Oh my, and my doctor wanted to throttle me!!!!! Of course, I lost weight. Decades later, Dr. Atkins echoed the process - and I was like a veritable lemming. In both those circumstances, however, I missed the point. Diabetes makes the point I missed quite clear - my WOE has to be forever - not "until". However, I didn't balk at that even for a second. I GET it!!!!!! Maybe when I have passed my first anniversary in August of 2014, I will have a list of tough milestones. This is all pretty new. I appreciate the help and information available here.

Having to give up my job I used to be a bus driver but that's not allowed for type 1s in my country.
