GABA Research

A team of researchers who were funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Canadian Diabetes Association did a study on the role of GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, an amino acid produced by beta cells in the pancreas. They found that GABA injections not only prevented diabetes in mice, but even reversed the disease.

The significance of GABA is that it corrects both known causes of Type 1 diabetes in mice: It works in the pancreas to regenerate insulin-producing beta cells and it acts on the immune system to stop the destruction of those cells. Those two actions are necessary to reverse the disease and prevent its recurrence.

This study is the first to identify and describe GABA’s importance in regulating the survival and function of pancreatic beta cells in mice, and they say it might lead to a cure for Type 1.

that sounds very promising... great news! I know my doc has often said that there is a lot more study needed on neurosignals and chemical function in the body. They've only really started producing drugs for diabetes based on neurosignals too... januvia is one I was placed on.... although it didn't work on me. Fingers crossed that it does lead to a cure for type 1... or at least a step closer.

I think MCS is a big GABA supporter. He has a great doctor who is into more natural sources. I do think Amino Acids are the trick.

Does anyone know, or can anyone make an educated guess... if this were to actually cure type 1, why wouldn't it also be able to cure type 2?

just a guess from me... but I think this study is on the effects on the auto immune system and type 1 is an auto immune disease whereas type 2 isn't. They're studying whether an amino acid can stop the body from producing antibodies to destroy insulin which only happens with type 1. With type 2 you wind up with beta cell damage in your pancreas because it has been overworked and stressed out over a period of time. I could be wrong... but that's my understanding. :D

I realize this is an old thread but I just came across this information. Has anyone taken GABA supplements to see what it does to your blood sugar? As you all know, I have anxiety and when it gets really bad, I have ativan to take. Ativan works on the GABA in your brain. When I take this. my blood sugar basically doesn't move so there has to be something to this for Type 1 and TYpe2. Any scientific people want to weigh in on this? I do think it is promising but also don't want to get my hopes up. I am thinking about asking the doctor at my next visit about taking GABA supplements.

Nope -- there is a direct effect on pancreatic beta cells!

I am taking 3g per day (partly because of this study) and I am noticing improved muscle tone, and my numbers have recently been great. I have no idea whether it is the GABA or not, since I have LADA and fluctuation is the rule rather than the exception, plus I have changed some other things recently.

GABA is the end product of the action of GAD-65 enzyme. Some type 1s and LADAs have antibodies to GAD-65 ... so this was of particular interest to me, being GAD-positive.

In some kind of time I heard a kind lighthouse cure debate about those issues with my doctors but they said that I saw in a magazine and saying ... Diabetics can cure by changing one word, not to take the insulin, but will be treated with a certain kind of way as to whether oral asthmatics. Regarding the studies that have been told that insulin can not be taken by the mouth to digest because the stomach acids.
