Default Medtronic files for FDA approval of MiniMed 670G ‘artificial pancreas’

Report: Medtronic files for FDA approval of MiniMed 670G 'artificial pancreas'

This is a hybrid closed-loop system, with the MiniMed insulin pump working with a Dexcom glucose sensor. The sensors results are sent directly to the pump, and it handles automatically adjusting your basal rate based on your glucose levels. You tell it before you eat or exercise so that it adjusts accordingly.

Highlighted Quotes
* The device measures blood glucose every 5 minutes.
* Patients must still recalibrate the device every 12 hours, change out the glucose sensor weekly and refill the insulin reservoir every 3 days.
* A1c started at an average of 7.4, and fell to 6.9 by the end of the study, with 58% of patients achieving that goal.
* There were no malfunctions, hyper- or hypoglycemic events or hospitalizations.
* The device proved so popular with the trial subjects that a group asked the FDA for continued access.

Very cool! I will be watching this closely and am feeling pretty excited that it's coming to the US first. Normally Europe gets all the shiny new toys first.

The trial was only done on T1's.

That said, I am pretty sure that if you were paying cash, Medtronic wouldn't care if you were T1 or T2. The only people who care are the insurance companies!
