i admire your life long qualities like being an observer, watcher, and scrutinizer of everything you have seen and heard in your life since you were a little kid. Its certainly a lost art in today's world where the IPhone is the center of the universe and people revolve around it to the exclusion of others that may be present as well as the little things in life surrounding them.

Air pollution contributes significantly to diabetes globally

Even low pollution levels can pose health risk

This could be 100% correct, but why does the little conspiracy theorist in me whisper this is a rouge to promote global warming and shift attention away from nutritional deficiencies. I've always lived in small places. Big city had a population of 5,280 in it's prime.

However, I must admit that I have worked in a paper mill for the last 41 years, all kinds of fume exposure.

Part of the reason for the increased numbers is the lowering of standards for being diagnosed. This occurred in 1997. it explains the sudden increase on Hearts Journey's post. They instantly increased the numbers by millions.

There is no single cause of the increase. Lowered standards, increased carbs intake as per diet recommendations, lower amounts of exercise, higher amounts of sedentary activites. They all add to the numbers.

I think more people are being diagnosed with diabetes because more people live sedentary lifestyles and also overeat. Many sit at a computer all day and then come home, eat pizza, and then sit in front of their home computer to surf the internet, or they watch TV, or they play video games for hours. Food is over-processed and food companies deliberately make things more salty and sweet than they need to be. Take pizza for example. People adore it. I worship it. And I hope I can still have 1 slice on special occasions.

I occasionally eat pizza - thin crust is the route to go - some people on these forums have made pizza crust using cauliflower which is supposed to significantly cut down on the carbs

With thin crust pizza - I'll have a slice with the crust but the second piece I'll just eat the toppings - drives my wife crazy Lol

Certainly, you can have it occasionally and, if you're willing to eat only the topping, you could have it more often. I like rfletcher's method of having only one slice with crust.

I never owned an IPhone.

Why do YOU feel these numbers have seen such a substantial increase?

What has changed between 1980 and today?
Processed foods.
