Salads
 
Since there really isn't just a FOOD thread, I hope this is alright for this thread....

Talk about your favorite kinds of salads, salad recipes, salad ideas, and maybe some nice pics?

I like salads with LOTS of stuff in them, usually tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, mushrooms, cheese, and some chopped up lunch meat. I like radishes when they are in season too.

At the very least, my salad has to have tomatoes and onions.

I love Russian Dressing, Catalina, Bacon Ranch, and Garlic Italian.

Probably my favorite restaurant style salad is Cobb Salad, since it has a bit of everything in it.

I also love Pea Salad, Potato Salad (yes, I know, it's a no-no), and Cole Slaw.

Probably my favorite thing my granny made me when I was younger was Jello Salad. It was lime jello with cottage cheese, fruit cocktail, and a teaspoon of minced onion in it. I still make that once in a while. Yeah, I know......it's not a real salad, but I still love it!

I usually have a salad for lunch almost every day. My favorite is a spinach salad with a hard boil egg with a sliced chicken breast on top. Perfect meal for me as I don't feel draggy during the afternoons and my BGs are severely affected by it.

I love salads. I usually eat a turkey salad from our local BBQ place or I'll eat a grilled chicken salad from just about anywhere. I just discovered Burger King's chicken salad. Unfortunately, tomatoes raise my sugar, so I omit them. I always try to have boiled eggs on hand. Love boiled eggs on my salads. I also add oven roasted sliced almonds. I buy them at my local grocery store.

instead of salads i follow the Calif black bear diet of fish, meat, nuts, leafs, vegetation, berries, roots, plants.

BH has been getting already prepared spring green mix salads, she adds cherry tomatoes, onion, peppers, olives, pecans, cucumber, and sometimes bacon bits, craisins, and boiled egg slices. She also gets a package of chopped cabbage (slaw mix) and puts it about 50-50 with the mixed greens. My dressing is 1-2 tablespoons of ACV, 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, and 2 tablespoons of flax seed oil. I sip down any of the dressing that remains.

Don't black bears eat grubs too?

It's taken me a while to post on this thread, but I should because I must eat at least one salad a day. :surprise:

My weekday go-to is greens from a bag (I prefer spring mix but am not above buying what's on sale) with cucumber, jalapeņo/serrano pepper, and a couple of mushroom slices thrown in. If I have them to use up, I'll toss in a couple of teaspoons of minced onion (I really like a llittle onion in my salad). The protein varies depending on what's in the house and often is leftovers. The dressing varies depending on how much fat there is in the protein and how tired I am of the creamy low-carb dressings we have on hand (DW is not a fan of them so only I use the ones we have in the house and I like to use them up before they expire lol).

My secret ingredient on salads is pickle juice (or, on rare occasions, lemon or lime juice). I just like how it brightens the bowl and adds a bit of bite against what typically are creamier or blander ingredients.

As I post this I'm eating a "cook's salad" (it's not quite a chef's salad) of red-leaf lettuce; cucumbers, jalapeņo; a little zucchini I had to use up; the remainder of this week's crimini mushrooms; leftover chicken, ham, and what little is left of some Gouda cheese, topped with a little extra virgin olive oil and served with some pork rinds. Works for me...

in reply to MBusters post above, no grubs as Calif bears are the healthiest in the nation. All Calif bears get a nutrition class and must pass with an A as well as finish an obstacle coarse that stretches from Yosemite to the SF Bay area near Fishermans Wharf in 3 days.

What a great idea! I love pickle juice and can drink it straight. :smile2:
One of the small towns that I lived in as a teenager sold pickles, for a nickel you could get a small cup of pickle juice. I always chose it over a soft drink.

I forgot to say that it was the local movie theater that did this! Sometimes the rowdy kids would use it as a weapon-throwing it at someone.
