Default Feeling really bad this morning

I woke up feeling good my sugar was 107
then I ate some cereal and had some coffee about 10 mins later
I felt so bad sweating, very weak, feeling like I was gonna throw up. Checked sugar it was 305 now my head is killing me ...... Help!!!

Hi Lady:

It's unfortunate that that has to happen sometimes. I am a Type 1 so I just inject a specified amount of Insulin if I get a high. I've had Diabetes for a long time so I sometimes do not feel my lows or highs. That is why I check my sugars often.

Since you are a Type 2, some People just wait until their sugar falls back to normal with the help of their medications and enough water to help rid their bodies of glucose.

Check your sugars twice a half hour apart. If both of the tests are over 300 and you feel like you describe, then you should get someone to take you to the ER or call the Ambulance because you are in DKA. Sorry, I misunderstood what you were asking.


You didn't say what kind of cereal you ate at breakfast. Most cereals sadly, raise a Diabetics blood sugar a lot. That's why many eat bacon, eggs, cottage cheese, with a slice of low carb toast or other protein based meals. It stays with them longer and doesn't raise their sugars too much.

I sometimes eat 3/4 cup of Special K or shredded wheat with 1/2 cup skimmed milk or soy milk, for breakfast. It has the nutrients. I know it's not exciting but I also sprinkle some Stevia on it with a quarter cup of blueberries or sliced strawberries. I like it.

I love those instant packet of oatmeal but they drive my sugar up, of course. Steel cut oats are better for a Diabetic. Sometimes I'll have a sugar-free cherry yogurt, a coffee, a glass of unsweetened apple juice and a few pieces of bacon or cheese. There are many possiblities.

That was a Good FBS you had though.

Sorry, Lady, I wasn't on the computer much in the day! Did you have just a 'serving' of cereal or were you like me before diabetes.......a very full bowl of cereal? I find I do better with cereals that are high fiber. The best one for me is Fiber One cereal, the original Fiber One. They have some flavored ones now but they are lower in fiber and higher in carbs. I also really like soy milk. Some people freak out about it but it tastes very creamy and good to me. Like Terrie suggests, though, I most often have eggs or cottage cheese for breakfast. I do have my eggs with two pieces of low carb bread and if I have cottage cheese, I scoop it up on high fiber crackers, such as Wheat Thin Fiber Selects. I hope you were able to good your glucose levels down in a timely manner.

Finally some help! Thank you both sooooo much
For one thing I'm a heart attack survivor Nov-17-01
so I don't eat any red meat or cheese, I only eat egg whites
and Soy milk is the only milk I use in my home.
the cereal was a small bowl of granola cereal
that I eat every morning. that's why I don't understand why that happen? it was very scary!

Wow. I don't know what to tell you if you had a breakfast that you eat often with no problem. Are you maybe coming down with a cold or something that might raise your blood glucose numbers? I hope you can figure out what's going on. Terrie has much more experience than I do. She's given you some good advice.

Hey Lady:

Thank Goodness you're okay. Too many things, known and unknown affect us when we have Diabetes unfortunately. Stress, unstated or higher carbs. in foods, hormones, generic drugs that may not work as Well as the brand name, too much or not enough sleep, various effects from alcohol, meds. for other conditions, other conditions themselves, fever, the weather even, etc., etc.

I'm sorry that you felt bad and also that you had a heart attack at such a young age. Geez. We have heart problems in the Family. I wondered if you do too.

Hi, Lady.

Have you had any recurrences of that unpleasant morning? Terrie is quite right, there are so many unknowns and variables it is very difficult to pin these things down sometimes. One of the things that can help is a diary. Write your BS readings, food, time, etc. Include stress, illness, activity, anything. If you compare notes over time you might be able to see a recurring theme and avoid it in the future.

Hi, Lady.

Yes, coming down with any kind of illness or infection can make you feel terrible and glucose control crazy. Even before any other symptoms appear.

Just a reminder. Take off from work and go to bed. Keep close watch on your sugars while you're sick. Don't skip any meals if you can help it, and don't skip your meds. Drink plenty of water/diet soda/chicken broth. Treat the symptoms. And if your temperature goes over 102 call the doctor.

Feel better. Get well.
