Question 4 hrs

hi its me again....how long is a fasting? I believe I ate last four hours ago.... my bs was 236 just now at 6:01am ....it was 172 at 1:46am..Im told that would actually be a random, not a fasting ...Im told a random is allowed to be as high as 180..... but over 200? but my doc would say it hasnt been over 180 ..its been over 180, 12 times in the last 2 weeks, dan died 21/2 weeks ago, thats of out of 69 tests.... but im also told that any test over 155 is damafing me.. but randoms are allowed to be higher....I guess I dont understand that.

For the purposes of most lab blood tests, "fasting" is normally specified as being at least 8 hours. In some cases, 12 and even 16 hours may be specified.

For routine blood testing, the digestive process should be complete by about 3 hours, so you should get a close to fasting value at 4 hours.

In my opinion, any figure above 140 more than one hour after food is unsatisfactory. I feel that the ADA standard of 180 is much too lax. (Personal view - you may agree to differ, your doctor certainly seems to )

Have a look at this section Healthy Blood Sugar Targets of Blood Sugar 101 for more information on healthy target values.

At 4 hours after a meal, the test would have to be classified as a "Random" and not a "Fasting". Fasting would have to be at 8 hours. I agree with John, the ADA standards are way off target and set too high. I think they are older standards and not based on more recent studies.

Violet, you have a great deal on you plate at the moment so I hesitate with this suggestion but... I am in the middle of Dr. Bernstein's book, Diabetes Solution. Dr. Bernstein is a type 1 diabetic who has successfully controlled his diabetes since his youth, making a career out of helping diabetics, both type 1 and 2 control their diabetes. In the beginning of the book he describes his path to wellness which I found reassuring when thinking of my own path! I recommend getting a copy of this book (mine is on the Kindle purchased through Amazon). I think just reading his book will provide you with some relief. I think it will help you rely on yourself rather than the sometimes contradictory comments given by the professionals you mention...not that you don't need at least one of these professionals...but they often don't agree. I wish you well and am sorry for your loss!

Great suggestion, Steve, but I know I couldn't concentrate enough to read after my husband died...it took months to get back to reading. There is some of his ideas online if I can find it...maybe someone else can point the way.

Violet, eating right is actually cheaper than my old way was. Seriously! Of course you will need to prepare your own food and perhaps you don't feel up to that right now, but if you can boil some eggs, buy some frozen spinach and cauliflower, etc. you can get by until you have a better frame of mind. Cheese is good to have on hand also. The simpler the better in my opinion in the beginning.

Hope this helps, I know things seem difficult right now,

I told marge, my nutrisionist, that im eating 50/50.. 50% good stuff, vegs etc....50% chocolate and other carbs. she knows whats going on in my life... is trying to help while not put too much on me either..all I ate at 6:30 as far as I remember was cherios with sweetner. and fat free milk. and i took my meds ... 211 seems a bit high to me.
