Default Confused... Could I be Diabetic?

Hi Everyone! I hope everyone is having a good day.... I just had some questions. Lately I have been feeling really run down and exhausted no matter how much sleep I get... I especially get tired after eating... I also get naseous sometimes after eating as well... and have been having horrible headaches and sometimes I get so thirsty I just chug water... My doctor sent me to get an MRI and that came out clean. Last week I went to my chiropractor and he tests blood sugars and that day my sugar came out to 274... This was 5 hours after my last meal... I do have a history of diabetes in my family my dad and grandfather have it. My dad has both types.... I called my doctor and told him and he sent me to for a fasting glucose test.... I found out that yesterday my numbers came back at 77... This was 16 hours since I had a last meal.... is it possible that it was too long of a fast and my sugars just went that low? I have read that you should eat lots of carbs before doing the test and I was trying to avoid carbs does that affect it? Should I get a meter and keep a log for myself and if my numbers continue to be high call the doctor? Im not sure that to do... I have been feeling so sick for a while now Im not sure what to do. My doctor referred me to a neurologist but all he will do is drug me up to stop my headaches.... Thank you for reading my novel! haha

Hello Lil, and welcome. Your symptoms and some of your numbers do point to diabetes. We're happy to read "novels" . . . the more information the better!

I think getting your own meter is a good idea. Strips are expensive, so unless your doc prescribes & your insurance covers it, try one of the less expensive models at Walmart or Walgreens for now.

Test when you first wake up, before you eat anything. This is your fasting blood glucose each day. When you keep your log, be sure to write down everything you eat and what time you eat it - this way it can produce cause & effect numbers with your test readings. Then test at 1 hour after your first bite of food, and again at 2 hours. This will give the doctor a much better picture of what is happening with your levels. With your family history added to the mix, I think checking more for diabetes would be foremost in your doc's mind! How old are you, by the way?

Thank you for joining us. I hope together we can clear up some of the confusion & get you some concrete information to take back to your doctor!

take care,

Thank you for your quick response!

I hope you can get to the bottom of this quickly - with all the thirst, headaches, fatigue, etc., you must be at your wits' end. As you know, there are different types of diabetes and some seem to overlap, so with your age, I hope someone will step up and order definitive tests for type 1 also. That would be for antibodies to islet cells and GAD64, and a C-peptide to see how much insulin your pancreas is actually producing.

A little more comprehensive explanation here: What Type Of Diabetes Do I Have?

Thank you for your time and response! I will definately go out and buy a monitor and keep track for a few days and see what happens! My doctor just shrugged it off because my glucose level was 77... People are telling me to see another doctor but i dont know

Well, your chiropractor clocked you at 274 five hours post-prandial. His test counts just as much, in my opinion. Something isn't right here and if your doc doesn't want to find out what that something is, I think it's valid advice to look for a second professional opinion. Your health and wellbeing depends on it, so if I were you, I'd take the bull by the horns and find someone willing to work with me. If you are able to rule out diabetes, then at least you can move on to find what other maladies manifest these symptoms.

Good luck to you and keep us posted!

I agree with Shanny, get a meter and test. Just taking a test here and there really doesn't give you much to go on. Catching diabetes early is a key factor to keeping complications down to a minimum. You can find really cheap test strips on the internet. Try Diabetic Supplies Online | Diabetes Testing Supplies & Products | American Diabetes Wholesale or Hocks.Com - Diabetic supplies, medical equipment, free shipping and health and beauty Aids. Both of the sites have really cheap test strips. They usually have meter kits, the meter along with test strips for an affordable price. You can also get a box of 100 lancets for under $2 on each of these websites.
