I just got diagnosed with diabetes a week ago (A1c 13.3) and I am taking the metformin 2 x a day. Yesterday, after breakfast I checked my bs and it was 122 which is good because the bs has been running in the 200-400 range. Even when I wake up it would be in the 200's. I didn't get to eat lunch yesterday at work and I started feeling really funny. I had this bad pain in my stomach and I got light headed and got a headache, nausea. So I checked my bs and it had gone done to 99. I thought you are suppose to feel better when the bs go down. I know i didn't like the feeling at all. So can someone please tell me what is happening.
What you were feeling sounds to me like a false hypo. Your body is used to much higher numbers so with a more normal level it's fighting you to get back to where it likes. Don't worry. These feelings will pass in short order as long as you keep your level there.
It could be a false hypo. The pain in your stomach screams metformin side effect, to me. If you're not taking metformin extended release, it may be upsetting your stomach. If you think that may be the cause (it doesn't go away), talk to your doctor about switching from regular metformin to extended release. I am betting you're taking regular, since you're taking it twice a day, or does your bottle say XR? Metformin tends to give me headaches on occasion, also. Also, as the others have said, your body will adjust to being at lower numbers.
Low carb diets are natriuretic - they make the kidneys dump sodium. Sodium deficiency can cause headache, dizziness and fatigue. When you feel this way, try drinking a cup of chicken broth.
Thank you. I was shock myself to see my bs so low. I think my main culprit was soda, bread and to much sugar in my coffee.. I have stopped rating and drinking all three which has helped a lot.
99 is not low. What you were having is called a false hypo. Your body is use to high blood sugar, so as you bring it down, you can have symptoms like dizziness.
You might want to go to the blood sugar 101 website as someone advised you to do in your introductory thread, and read the section 'What is normal blood sugar' and 'How to lower your blood sugar' These will tell you what bg readings are too low and too high.
