Default BS went from 221 to 100 in 2 hours?

I am new to this site and looking for some answers. I have been experiencing severe lightheadedness, headaches and an inability to concentrate for a few weeks now. I am also very cold all the time and feel weak/sluggish. As I have been recently diagnosed with gastroparesis based on an abnormal gastric emptying scan, I kept thinking it had something to do with this illness. Recently, however, I have been monitoring my BS levels with a home device. This morning 1 hour after breakfast, I felt positively awful - dizzy, fuzzy head, headache - my blood sugar was at 70. So I thought perhaps I better eat something else. The mini 100 calorie GoMacroBar made me feel worse.

About 4 hours later, despite no hunger, I had a 1/2 cup of white rice and 3 oz of crab meat. Yes, I realize that white rice spikes blood sugar but it is on my gastroparesis "easy to digest" food list plus I thought my BS levels were running too low. I started to feel funny again so took my BS level about 15 minutes after eating and it was at 221!!! I made my husband test himself thinking the meter might be faulty but he was only 99. I am VERY concerned. After two hours it came down to 100. I typically do not test it this soon after eating. I usually test it before eating and it runs anywhere from 50-80. And then 2-3 hours after and it is never over 102. I think I may be missing the severe high after eating? What could this be? Could I be an undiagnosed diabetic? Any insights would be tremendously helpful as I feel very helpless.

There is definitely an impact on blood sugars from gastroparesis. I found the article below and though it might help you understand the relationship between your newly dx gastroparesis and the affect it can have on ones blood sugars. You may want to see a endocrinologist to provide you further insight. Zero in on looking under the section

Thanks Hearts Journey. So perhaps I should get checked again for diabetes? I have not had anything but a fasting glucose test in over a year. The article makes sense but it does not explain how my BS could go as high as 221?

Hi cat1234, welcome to the forum.

Assuming from your Type Undiagnosed in your profile you are not taking insulin or diabetes medications. In addition to the gastroparesis you might want to search the web for reactive hypoglycemia. There can be a connection between the two.

Cat, i would want to rule out all forms of diabetes by seeing and Endo or perhaps 2 Endo's (2 opinions). a fasting glucose test is not conclusive in of itself and further tests (ie: PP, OGTT, random, A1c, ) should be done. When you ate 1/2 cup of white rice and 3 oz of crab meat, do you know the amount of carbs that meal/snack contained? While your gluocse returned to 100 after 2 hrs, having it rise to 221 is more concerning.

That meal had 30g of carbs. Today my total carb count was 127 out of 1,000 calories. It is hard to eat a lot with the gastroparesis. I need to find another endo - the one I saw was not impressed by my fasting testing numbers and a borderline A1C, so he refused to order any more tests. That was a year ago...and before the GP diagnosis.

That is correct mbuster. I have not been diagnosed with diabetes. That is very interesting about the reactive hypo and the gastroparesis. And a little scary too because it doesn’t sound like there is anything I can do

Yes find another Endo. i wonder how long of a delay before the food in your stomach is emptied and the start of the insulin response to it.

Thanks I will. In the meantime any clue to get rid of this constant brain fog and lightheadedness?
