Weight loss is one of the classic signs of diabetes, although many people with diabetes show know symptoms at all (I was one of those). The best way to find out for sure if you're diabetic is to go to your doctor and ask for a fasting blood sugar test and a hyglated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test. These will tell you and your doctor for sure. Some people also get a c-peptide and GAD test done as well to check for antibodies that would indicate a Type 1 rather than Type 2 diabetes diagnosis.

Unexplained weight loss is one of the first signs. In type 1 it happens over several months. It can also happen in type 2. Basically since you have way too much glucose on board and not enough insulin to push it into the cells to be used for energy. So basically you are starving yourself .

Yes your body is starving because the glucose cant get into your cells to fuel them. result the glucose stays in your blood ... high blood sugar and your starving so you loose weight.

Nope.. BG was on under control but i couldn't get any weight . I was taking Metformin 500mg * 2 and following LCHF. I tried all possible way but all in vain. Finally i decided to take insulin as there was only skin and bone left in my body. I got 2.5 kg in 3 weeks.

I think this is the T1 scenario only. Early-stage T2s typically have way too much insulin, not too little. Most insulin resistance is liver IR and/or muscle IR. This is why 80% of T2s GAIN weight and don't lose it and present at diagnosis overweight or obese. There may be some cannibalization of muscle because of the "cell starvation" you mentioned, but not fat mobilization or fat metabolizing (from diet) as even a small amount of insulin (let alone the abnormally high levels in an early-stage T2) blocks both of those. It is much more common for T1s to lose a lot of weight since insufficient insulin and no insulin resistance triggers the reaction you described.

The reason appears to be pretty simple: insulin resistance is primarily liver which causes Dawn Phenomenon and other spikes during non-eating times and muscle IR. These leave excess glucose in circulation in spite of abundant insulin. If fat tissue is not correspondingly insulin resistant (apparently 80% of T2 cases), that extra insulin will cause fat storage (made from all that excess glucose) and hence weight gain.

Remember, insulin causes:

1) Muscle to uptake glucose
2) Liver to hold on to its glycogen stores and not dump gluocse, and
3) Glucose to be converted to triglyceride and stored in fat cells

Which of these is "broken" and to which degree determines the T2 outcome. A T2 will lose weight if adipose (fat) IR is relatively greater than the other two which diminishes the body's ability to store fat. If insulin resistance is mainly the other two (majority case) but fat still responds well to insulin, increased body fat is the result.

Post short and long term effects

High Blood sugar is a problem i long term perspective. Actually fluctuation of levels is the main problem. Going form low to high. the main issue is to stabilize and average figure to be close to this in normal conditions. It's normal some times to have low or high it's in every person life not only diabetics, but the issue is that fast changes are not so easy for body to handle.
