keto and dawn phenomon.

OK, we are on a modified atkins diet for seizure control but Ronnie is also T1 diabetic. This morn BG was 175. I guess I am not Controling something correctly. HE is on an insulin pump and we have kept a1c at 5.2-5.4 for over a year now. But with an even more strict diet, I am having difficulty with elevated bg especially in the AM. Can I get some feed back. I know he has dawn phenomom but I have been able to deal with it with a higher basal in the early AM but now with less carbs we are dealing with higher AM bg's.

For me, DP seems pretty closely tied to what I eat later at night (more protein or more fat, time of the evening, etc.). Any changes to that lately?

Ronnie's diet is a modified Atkins diet prescribed by Johns Hopkins Epilepsy diet clinic. A regimented higher fat. daily 30 or less carbs Daily.Moderate protein. Last evening had salmon at 36 grams of protein. I dosed for 10 grams of carb. His BG held to less than 110 post meal so I did not dose later for the protein. I wonder if I should dose for the Protein a little later or get the r insulin and dose right after the meal but conservatively to account for the slower metabolisim of the protein. Supper, Usually around 10 gm carbs of the leafy green type. with a very HI fat lo carb desert 3g. extra oil and butter on every thing. If he has too few carbs he gets a low carb drink of Keto OS. Suposedly only 3g of carbs but I suspect more. Dinner is usually 5:30-6:30 pm.

I have in the past read some posts here of T1s who definitely needed to bolus for protein - and if my memory serves me, they did delay it for the delayed protein digestion.

It's a real balancing act, isn't it. I commend you for staying on top of it all.
