metformin dose goes up A1C stays the same

I have gone from an A1C of 7.2 to an A1C of 7.3 after my doc changed my Metformin from 500x2 to 1000x2. Nothing has changed in my day to day in fact I think I am getting better at managing my diet, if anything my carb servings are lower than the max per meal I was given. In that 3 months I have actually lost another 5lbs, and fit in to a 20yr old boy scout belt, I am just one notch away from when I was 16. Any ideas or experiences?

Sounds like your max number of carbs per meal is still too high. A lot of us eat less than 30 grams of carbs per day, and I'm guessing you're over that per meal. We're still looking for a T2 that can maintain their BG in a safe range (which is lower than you may have been told too) with diet and exercise, following a diet with the number of carbs recommended by the ADA.

3 Carb servings sounds so much better than 45 grams of carbs, wonder why they aren't pushing mmol/L units of testing. 10 mmol sounds better than 180 mg

I was told 15g of carbs = 1 serving, and I could have 4 servings per meal, 2 per snack (2 snacks daily). I don't snack 3 times a week and that is always 1 carb max. When my wife is in crack down mode on me she measures everything on and off my dinner plate and I am lucky if I actually eat a full 3 servings. I have a few breakfast meals that I have engineered out to be 30gram breakfasts. My lunch is normally a big salad that probably in veggies alone nets out to 30 grams. I don't know how you do 30grams a day, when the hospital dieticians told me 60grams per meal. No matter what I eat, if that is constant and I double my Metformin shouldn't I see a lower A1C

Metformin doesn't stop or reduce the amount of glucose the carbs you eat is making. It works to reduce the amount of glucose and amina acids your liver converts to glucogen and stores to be later released as more glucose.

How do I do it? I don't listen to dietitians because they have been misinformed and teach what they've been taught. If I tell you the world is still flat and that I am a geographer, doesn't mean that I'm right.

I count 90 g of carbs per day! If I ate that much, I would have an A1C of 9 at least. The hospital dieticians are wrong! wrong! wrong! Read around this forum some more and go lower on your carbs and higher on protein and fat. Clearly the amounts you are eating now aren't lowering your blood sugar. Are you testing? And eating to your meter? Try that approach; it works. Good eating by following some of the recipes on this forum. I can't believe 60 grams a meal!

If you continue to follow your dietician's advice, your A1c will continue to rise. These people teach us what they've been taught, and what they've been taught is wrong. What they've been taught is also governed by the ADA guidelines, and the ADA is in the political and subsidizing grasp of BigAgra - the grain growers of the country.

Don't be fooled. Limit your carbs to less than 50g per day and that means stop using their 15g serving business - get a carb counter and count the actual grams of carbs you ingest. You'll see results immediately. Dozens of us here were given the same advice you were, and have discovered that it's a recipe for failure. Again - don't be fooled by what your medical team advises.

Have you checked out Blood Sugar 101? It's very informative about getting blood sugars down, and was written by a woman who's a type 2 herself and who has done her homework.

When you want to know more about how to eat lower carb, check out LCHF for Beginners | DietDoctor.com. Many of us here have found that the only way to get blood sugars lower is to ditch the carbs, especially anything made from grains, including pasta, bread, crackers, cereal, and also legumes like beans.

Then we use our meters to test anything we eat to see what happens to our blood sugars one hour after starting to eat and again 2 hours after. It's more trustworthy than any dietician's advice.

And JB? I hope you've overcome your needle phobia and are doing a little testing now . . . you really need to know your postprandial numbers in order to get this thing under control. One hour after a meal you should register no higher than 140mg/dl or 7.8mmol/l.

Now that I think about it, I may be right!!! I've never been around the world, maybe I've been from side to side. LOL

Looks like you've been a member for a year. You must have been away from the forum a long time since you joined. Very low carb is spoken about daily. Many new people will join in soon, I'm sure, that came here looking for help because the ADA advice did not work for them.

ok, so the doubling my met dose was the question and everyone has dodged that by coming up with some way low carb numbers. I count all my carbs. My big lunch salad today by weight comes up to 2 veggie servings or 30 carbs.
