Default Diabetes Treatment

Hi all

I had been diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus 2 years back with high sugar levels of 330 (PP) and 643(random). I had symptoms (realised later) of weightloss, leg cramps and tiredness.

The type of diabetes could not been diagnosed as teratment with insulin was started immediately.

Since then I was under Novmix30 - 20 units daily. With balanced diets, controlled carbohydrates and sugar intake, the sugar levels were under control and HBa1C count between 6-7%.

However 6 months back, the sugar levels had started to rise and HBA1c had alsod increased to 8%. There had not been any change in lifetyle that could cause this. While I was advised to increase the insulin intake, it did not help. Then my diabetologist, introduced Glimisave m2 and gradually reduced insulin. This has significantly improved the sugar levels and its almost normal now.

Recently, on a routine medical chek up, the medical practitioner advised that I should stop Glimisave immediately as it is harmful for the beta cells.

I would like to have information

1. Is ther eany means to find out now whether I am type 1 /2
2. Is Glimisave harmful for pancreas

If you are only on 20 units of 70/30 mix and your A1C is about 6-7%, in my honest opinion I think that you are T2, your A1C is good and your insulin usuage is low. A type 1 usually have higher readings and need more insulin. Your doctor can run a C-Peptide blood test and then there is an OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test). Glimisave is a sulfonylurea and it stimulates the pancreas to work harder and some people will say that it harms the pancreas. I have been taking a sulfonylurea since 2000 and I take Lantus & Novolog. I don't think that I make much insulin anymore and I may have burned most of my beta cells by using drugs to stimulate it. If you can do without it, then that would be great. I am just trying to keep my blood glucose under control and Glipizide helps me.

Just a thought here, typically T1's are diagnosed early on in life.

Here are a couple of articles from BloodSugar101, one of the best diabetes websites we know about . . .

Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults (LADA)

Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY)

Perhaps you can pick up a little more information from these pages and see if any apply to you more than a typical type 1 or type 2 diagnosis.
