The Evolution of Pumps

The prototype of the first pump that delivered glucagon as well as insulin, backpack style, was in the early '60s.

Most of today's pumps are about the size of a 3/4" stack of business cards.

Yes this is serious! This was only a prototype just to see if the whole idea of insulin pumping was feasible. Pumps like the one in the picture were not produced and sold. It was more like a lab type experiment.

Egads!! Now those Pioneers(guinea pigs) are the ones that pumpers should be thankful to.

In 1977/78 area, a Lad in our town had been dxd. with Type 1 Diabetes and the town got together to raise money to buy him a pump. It was only the size of a brick and near as heavy as one.

My first "cell phone" was only slightly smaller :) A desktop model made to go in a car. Attached handset.
