Breakthrough pill can CURE diabetes: New drug fights both types of killer disease | Health | Life & Style | Daily Express

From the article: "In experiments researchers discovered that using a pill containing common bacteria found in the human gut can shift the control of glucose levels from the pancreas to the upper intestine.

It is believed that this “rewiring” of the body could revolutionize treatment for diabetes - both Types 1 and 2 - and potentially one day offer the possibility of a cure."

While this isn't a cure, it may be another avenue of treatment, but I just hate it when they claim this will "cure" both type 1s and type 2s.

Type 1s maybe, because their pancreas just isn't producing any insulin at all, but don't some type 2s actually produce too much insulin because of insulin resistant cells? Adding more insulin won't help out, will it?

No mention of the four letter word there!

Thank you newspaper for over-hyping the research!

The issue here is whether the research, done in New York (but reported in the UK?) will generate something that will make an appropriate profit for the developer. But until they move up from rat research, I won't be holding my breath for anything spectacular!

I'm fairly sure my problem is insulin resistance, not lack of insulin. And yet another "eat what you want" medication doesn't impress me. There's no free lunch.

Yes, as both Michael and SilverTiger says, the primary issue in type 1 is insulin deficiency, where in type 2 it's usually insulin resistance. I think it unlikely that the same approach - whether as a control or (OK, I'll say the word) a cure could apply to both.

Thanks for finding and sharing the article.

The whole gut microbiome thing is fascinating. It would be great for T1s and insulin-dependent T2s if part of the gut has the capacity (and if that capacity could be activated) to safely generate insulin. It will be interesting watching this.

But - lol - breath, not holding.

The best control you will find will be in the grocery store and not the pharmacy. If they do develop a pill I would opt out as I am not going back to eating triple whoppers anytime soon

The telling part of Nancy's post has to be

Has no-one noticed that our endocrine system is a complex beast? Somehow I suspect that delegating an important function to another organ, not strictly in the endocrine system, would come with a price that I wouldn't want to pay. And I don't mean $$$$$!

Yes, I found that whole line of research a bit frightening.

It did remind me to take my probiotic however. Which I suspect is a good thing.
