Default metformin side effects

When I first started metformin a few years ago I got the runs. We lowered the dose and the problem subsided. My dose has been increased to 1000 mg twice daily for a couple of years now with no problem. Now since I have been on LCHF I am having that problem again. So I am wondering if it is likely that I need less Metformin or should I be looking for other causes. I don't want to give up this way of eating. There are a few things I really miss but not enough to risk the consequences of letting my BG get high.

It's a side effect of the metformin. You might have the doctor switch you to the ER version, but that's no guarantee you won't have it. yeah some ppl have taken it for years with no problems/

I would continue taking it as long as you can tolerate it. Unfortunately, I was one of the unlucky ones that couldn't take any of them without some gastric upset.

Be sure you take it with meals and see if that helps.

A possibility....

If you've had your gall bladder removed, and have increased fats, that could cause the runs (I know, because this is what happened to me).

If this is the case, you'll need to supplement with bile salts (Ox Bile - 125mg capsules - one or more with each fatty meal/snack).

I haven't had my gallbladder out but my mother and sister have so I may have that in my future. I was wondering about the fat and gallbladder and other digestive issues with high fat that I hadn't been used to eating. I'm not trying to eat more fat, just not avoiding it as I am avoiding carbs.l

So what do you all do when your not feeling well in the belly? I had planned to have salad and a large helping of steamed Kale with butter, but when the time came I looked at the bowl of kale (which normally I really like) and just couldn't eat it. I had my salad, some mixed peas and carrots, and about 1/3cup of the mac'n'cheese I had made for my parents. 1hr PP my bg was 166 (193.2-126.8) High but not unexpected. Before lchf I'd have followed the BRAT protocol: banana, rice, applesauce, toast for my present condition but none of that is lchf obviously. I have had Imodium. So far so good. But my belly has felt better.

Even that small portion of mac & cheese could set off the metformin. It does not play well with carbs, and the peas/carrots are carby too.

I've been off my feed today too, but hot broth tastes good to me, and my iced green tea. Haven't forced myself to eat, but really must keep up with fluids. Hoping to feel better tomorrow, because even though it's only us two, I need to do a little prep for the holiday meal Sunday.

Shanny what do you mean set off the Metformin? Actually I decided to eat that little bit of carb because I had been "running" all day. I decided to hold the metformin for a couple of days and restart it at a lower amount. I had been eating carbs most of the time I was taking Metformin although nowhere near what the ADA recommends. I've been taking metformin for a few years-don't exactly remember when I started, so it's the negligible carbs and higher fat that is new. Really was craving a saltine so I ate a few peanuts for the salt. I'm defrosting some broth I made a few weeks ago and will have that tomorrow adding more salt. I have been under a severe amount of stress in the past few weeks and am exhausted. Another real possibility is that I have succumbed to a GI "bug."

I'd bet on the "bug." The broth sounds like a good plan of action along with some real rest.

I wondered about that. Is it a prescription medicine?

My next sentence was to explain what I meant - met 'does not play well with carbs' - that metformin often causes these problems when carb consumption is higher. If you've been eating carbs all along with your metformin, then perhaps you have contracted a germ of some sort. I guess time will tell.
