One thought…I spike to anything I eat in the mornings, so I try to keep it as low carb as possible…even coffee raises mine. Why not try leaving the salsa off for a couple of mornings and just see what that does?

I agree with Pat . . . just try it without & see what happens. Depending on the brand, I'm guessing 5g of salsa is close to 1/4 cup; 3 or 4 tablespoons? And some brands are using tomato concentrate as a base, which might pack more punch that you realize. Onions and peppers aren't free foods either.

This is where eat-to-your-meter comes in . . . some things hit us harder than others, and just because it's only 5 grams, doesn't mean it can't spike you to the moon.

Ah, Shanny, you know me better than that! That 5 grams of carbs is 2 tablespoons of salsa, and the tomatoes, onions, and peppers are where those carbs come from. I have been eating to my meter and cutting carbs for years now, and you know it. But what do you do when there are no carbs left to cut except vegetables and your blood sugar is spiking? Look at my diagnosis date, Shanny. Over 10 years on just Metformin is an exceptional run, made possible only by eating low carb. But diabetes is a progressive disease, and someday you, too, may run out of carbs to cut. (May that day be many years away!)

I took the Bydureon yesterday afternoon. I had a late afternoon 4 hour fasting reading of 88. I was 130 2 hours after dinner, where I treated myself to 2 large biscuits, because I can not remember the last time I had a biscuit and I wanted to see what Bydureon can do. I am excited at what kind of lovely reading I can get with my usual low carb dinners. I was 118 when I went to bed, which is typical for me, and 115 when I got up instead of my usual dawn phenomenon 135.

The Bydureon seems to be having a good effect so far, but allegedly it takes up to 2 weeks to have full effect.

Thought I would update. No lump where I injected the Bydureon.

My dawn phenomenon morning blood sugars are gone. My morning reading today was 103, down from my usual 135. Yesterday my highest reading was a 124 one hour post prandial after lunch, which was a 10 carb chicken salad from McDonald's with 4 grams of my dressing, not the 10 grams of theirs. I am consistently getting pre-meal readings in the 100 neighborhood.

The biggest effect seems to be a lack of appetite. I am eating less. I am not actively nauseous, just hardly ever hungry at all. I do get nauseous if I take my morning Metformin and don't eat anything, and the Bydureon seems to have made it so that I have less time to eat than before, only about an hour.

another update.

Week one good effects from the Bydureon lasted only 3 days. I have read that you don't get full effect for two weeks, so I am pressing on. Today is day 4 after my second injection. As last week, my blood sugars are not as low as the first 3 days, but not as high as without the Bydureon. We shall see.

In general, the Bydureon seems to act well for my basal blood sugar level, but not do as much to prevent spikes as I need. for 3 days, anyway.

The second dose of Bydureon lasted the full week!

Unfortunately, I seem to have developed a rash, 1 inch across and itchy, at my first two injection sites. I gave myself the third injection anyway, but I will be calling the doctor tomorrow. I guess I am one of the people who develop antibodies and react to exenatide.

And the verdict is in. I definitely have a "localized reaction" to the Bydureon. I chose to go on insulin rather than try another of the GLP-1 agonists. So, the Bydureon experiment is over.
