Smile Traveling with Insulin

I'm on Lantus and Novolog pens, and we recently went to Italy for thirteen days. It was a great trip, and also educational as far as my diabetes is concerned!

I carried the Bayer Contour Next meter, which proved to be perfect. It allowed me to mark each test as fasting, before a meal, after a meal, or "unmarked." This was a great help given the big difference in time zones from back home and the various snacks and meals on the plane. I know meters store data, but I also record my data on a chart in a notebook, so it was easier to sort it all out later. Of course we re-set our watches when we arrived, but we still ended up with some meals that were early or late, and I also tested frequently, so that ability to mark each test was helpful.

While there, I had a perfect lesson regarding the wonderful effect of exercise on blood sugar (which we all know, but it sure was dramatic--and is now a motivator for lazy me to get off my rear and exercise more often.) We were on all-morning plus all-afternoon walking tours every day except for when we took a train to a different city, and my BS readings were excellent--better than at home--except for one low, probably because of the long tour in the Vatican, then a lot of walking afterward trying to find some place to eat.

At any rate, I sure like the Contour Next meter for traveling--when the usual schedule might be disrupted.

Oh--and the Frio cooling packs have been wonderful--kept everything cool in Cancun and in St Thomas in April, and throughout Italy as well. Someone here had mentioned them, and I am so thankful!
