Default Starting insulin + Metformin

So, after the adverse reaction to Bydureon I chose to go the insulin route. I have been prescribed lantus, and I insisted on a vial rather than a pen. Being a nurse, I am accustomed to using vials and measuring doses of things. The doc is wisely starting me on only 2 units, since the Bydureon is still in my system. Every three days I can increase the dose by 2 units.

Now we just have to see if I have to go through my durable medical goods supplier for the syringes instead of the pharmacy.

A wise choice, indeed.

Here is hoping I do not react to the Lantus injection! But it seems unlikely, really. I have a positive outlook. The doc expects me to gain weight. I surely hope I do not! Any advice on that, avoiding weight gain on insulin? I do not intend to alter my low carb eating habits, and to monitor portion size carefully.

Administer insulin to your eating, do not eat to your insulin. (as many do)

Thank you for your quick responses, RCG. I value the experienced advice!

All we are trying for now is a basal rate, no rapid acting to cover mealtime carbs. Your advice seems to me to be spot on. I am waiting one more day to start the Lantus, having taken the Bydureon on Tuesday afternoon.

From what I have read of others' experiences, it is typical to start with a low dose and then gradually increase. So don't be discouraged if the insulin doesn't seem to be working at first.

Cathyy, how is the Metformin & Insulin (Basal) working out for you? Are you finding it hard to manage your BGL? What about your weight, has it fluctuated since you started this treatment? What is your diet, are you still LCHF, how many grams of carbs per day? What dosage are you taking? I wish to try this method & am curious how it's working for you. I understand that a treatment does not respond the same for everyone, but would like to know your progress. Thank you

It is going very, very well. I do not know why, but taking a basal dose of insulin seems to allow me to to eat a moderate amount of carbs, like up to 25 at lunch or supper, but I still can not do carbs at breakfast. Yesterday my pre lunch and dinner BG was 88. I "spiked" to 106 and 111 after 1 hour, and was back to 88 at 2 hours. I had precooked ribs with barbecue sauce from the local supermarket for lunch, unknown carbs, and meat loaf, steamed cruciferous vegetables and mashed potatoes for supper, 26 grams of carbs. I am still eating low carb, but my goal now is to stay under 50-60 grams a day. I go to bed in the low nineties and wake up 10 points higher, instead of the 130-135 that I always woke to no matter how low carb I ate.

So, yeah, success story for me so far! This is the first thing that has ever lowered my Dawn Phenomenon morning reading, after 15 years. My weight has no fluctuated outside my usual 2 pounds of variance, at least so far.
