Default Update: Artificial Pancreas and Encapsulation

Attended the Annual JDRF Conference for my region yesterday. Two exciting bits of information from JDRF International Board member Lorraine Stiehl:

Artificial Pancreas: From Medtronic has been FDA approved and will be first released in the US (not Europe) in 2017. Kady Helme also spoke and is wearing the AP. It is only 2 pieces: The CGM and pump; that's it. (Earlier versions of AP had even more pieces, making it more cumbersome and frankly impractical.) There is tubing. You still calibrate the CGM 2x per day or if it tells you to do so. Battery life is a little less than a typical pump; always carry extra double A batteries.

Encapsulation: To me, this was even more exciting. Lorraine Stiehl gave an analogy of a cross country trip. The encapsulated cells start in SF and need to make it to NYC. As of today they've made it to Newark. Now know it takes a long time to get from Newark into the City, but still. A device that's about 1 1/2" long, embedded under the skin on the back. No CGM, no insulin MDI or pump. No finger pricks or calibration. No tube. No nothing! Lasts about 18 months, before replacement. Wow!
