Default blood sugar targets etc

I was getting average 6.2 blood sugar readings with a low carb diet and 3 x 500mg metformins a day.+ 13 units of insulin at night.

a doc said to stop taking the metformin.

I did for a week but did not like the numbers. so I tried 250mg 3 times a day.

is a week enough for the body to adjust to give real blood sugar readings?

AIC is 5.8 before I changed the medication.

thanks all

I've read reports of both immediate effect, and effect that isn't maximized for many weeks - and don't think there is a clear answer beyond: we're all different.

In my case, when I gradually dropped metformin, I could tell within a couple of days and then waited a few weeks for my bg to stabilize before dropping it more.

When I recently restarted it at 500 mg/day, I noticed a down-tick in bg, but because there are variables other than metformin I honestly can't conclude it was the met. Plus, 500 mg is such a low dose.

You might notice some small change in a week from 750 mg/day - but likely wouldn't know conclusively if it helped for another couple/few weeks.

Goal BG is somewhat individual depending on your other issues and your doctor's goals. My doc would cut the insulin before cutting the metformin, for instance. His personal experience is that more of his patients maintain better BG control using metformin than insulin.

I think a week is a good time to wait. You get kindof a brief honeymoon period where your body doesn't seem to know that you are off the metformin, but it doesn't generally last too long.
