CGM thinking
I am going to try a CGM this Friday for a week. I was wondering if anyone uses a CGM here? What do you use? How do you find it? Is it worth the cost?

I've been using a CGM for 20 years (actually worked on technology of first one in order to get it).
They are great for a few reasons BUT they are NOT perfect - you need to check it against a meter whenever the reading doesn't make sense. If you are glucose unaware (don't feel a low or high) they can be a real lifesaver, but beware they DO make mistakes and SHOULD be checked against a meter for any reading that doesn't seem correct. Please contact me if any more questions. |
I use a Dexcom G5 and find it invaluable. Before getting one I was testing on average 7 times a day, and was still missing most of the night and unexpected post-prandial highs.
If you only want to use one occasionally, or cost is a concern, and don't need the low blood sugar alarm, you could look into the flash blood glucose meter, FreeStyle Libre. The sensor is smaller because it doesn't have a transmitter, and you hold the reader over the sensor to catch up on what's happened since your last reading. Otherwise Dexcom is considered one of the best CGMs. I think it's worth the cost, I pay for it 100% myself (which comes to ~$4,000 US/year). |
