Default New to forum. Hi.

Ok, I'm 26, been diagnosed with type one 1 since 14 or 15, been a while. Im hopin to get a conversation here. i started insulin at 15 and maintained it till about 17, when insurance was lost. anyway, from 18-20, i had no insulin, none whatsoever. but during that time, i was smoking pot at a good rate. was the weed keeping me alive? anyone? i know in California it's medicinal use is legal. I currently smoke pot, and take Lantus, and Humalog.

Hi Scott - welcome.

Scary for a T1 to be without insulin! If there are studies indicating that weed controls blood sugar, I'm not aware of them. My vote is that your adolescent body was just pretty resilient and that you were honeymooning - you pancreas had not quite given up the ghost yet. Or maybe the pot was making you so mellow that you just didn't give a c*#p. Did you test your blood sugar during that time, or have any A1Cs done?

would the honeymoon stage be before i was diagnosed, cause when i finally crashed, was bad! No i didn't have anything, no test, no doc.; but wouldn't my heart, liver, kindey, or something? i do now, i struggle with diet, not so much dosage, but pot helps with it. reminds me i should dose.

I'd say give up the pot and carbs and in three months see what you get for your A1C. I'm not aware of any pot related tales, but if you didn't test how do you know what your BG did while you were in Lala land?

Good luck,

As of right know, A1c is at 7.2, down from 7.9. when i smoke marijuana, 2-3 times weekly, 1 hit a day. when i smoke it, helps with me taking insulin. Lantus nghtly, and HumaLog, for Meal/Snack dosage. and i eat healthier believe it or not, when smoking. and exercise regularly.

You would be unusual if you could not eat carbs with a case of the munchies.

I think I heard them call it that when I was a wee lad. They say it makes you forget, but I just don't remember.

Smoking weed doesn't affect my numbers (I smoke regularly due to arthritis pain @ 20 yrs old), it used to until I realized it was only causing my highs cause I forgot to give my insulin when munching out. I soon realized my stupidity and started giving my insulin. All in all, I exercise daily, obviously eat regularly lol and I'm doing great!! I've never been so happy and content with having diabetes and realizing I can live a regular life and have control. The sensor attached to pump is a life saver when it comes to the damn finger pokes I lacked doing yay!

No, the honeymoon can last for months or years post-diagnosis, even for someone who's had that bad crash.

Having been quite the party girl in an earlier day, I can say without hesitation that life's a lot more fun with a clear head. Have you tried eliminating the "medicinal" weed and seeing what life's like without it? I'd never tell anyone to eschew needed medications, but.......

I have tried cutting it out I went for a few weeks just obviously to make sure it wasn't affecting my health other than the known causes of smoking it but ya!! I don't drink, can't. I used to but it affected my blood sugars way too much. And I honestly just don't enjoy it. I don't party actually at all, lol
