Default So that is DKA

Hey yall. Been awhile since I posted. Over Labor day weekend I had been feeling ill-- I thought maybe it was the stomach flu or something like that.. come to find out Tuesday-- while on my first day of a new job mind you, I felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest-- I could feel my heart pounding out of my head-- I felt like total crap. My BS was 250 and I had been giving myself my fast acting insulin(novolog) but had ran out of my Lantus. So I thought I was maintaining it decently, boy was I wrong. While at work I had worked up my patients, and then asked the doctor to check my vitals-- my pulse was 130 and my BP was 186/148. Obviously, I left work. Drove home( I know I know BAD) and had hubby come take me to the ER. After 7.5 hrs in the waiting room of the ER my condition became much worse-- by the time I had made it to the back and in a room I was in so much pain. At this point I still was NOT thinking DKA-- I was thinking it was my appendix. I had so much pain in that area.. I had NOT eaten in 28 hours but was still vomiting bile and all the fun stuff. While they had sent me for a CT scan , apparently my urine lab work came back -- I was notified when I returned to my room that I was being admitted for DKA. Talk about shock -- I was in disbelief as my sugars had NOT been running to high compared with what they where when I was first diagnosed 5 yrs ago. I quickly learned that DKA was much more serious than I had first thought. Between critical care, IV fluids, IV insulin and the depleting of my potassium in my body-- My little 102lbs was on the road to recovery. In the 4 days I was in the hospital I gained 11lbs --there are NO amount of words to say how happy that has made me.. I had struggled with being able to gain weight-- I am doing well now-- and am hopeful that soon I will have a pump.. can't wait for that
I am writing this cause I was so sure it was NOT my diabetes and was something else-- I learned that my diabetes effects my entire life--

Oh and forgot to mention-- my job fired me because I went into the hospital

I will have to admit that if I had a choice of which insulin to run out of it would be my bolus insulin. You can get by on just your bolus if you want to inject some every 2 hours.
