Default Struggling to bring levels down.

As you know I quit smoking and did a big toss out of carbs in my kitchen. Yesterday I did my groceries and brought food that hf/lc list of the Diet Doctor.com. This morning I tested it was 14 and about 15 mins ago after breakfast I tested again it 17. I won't be testing again till 45minutes time.

Last night dinner I had sticky honey drumstick (skin free), corn on cob and peas.

Breakfast was 2x sticky honey drumsticks.

What else do I need to do to bring down the blood sugar levels down.

Hello there sweetroch.

I am not diabetic, but maybe there,s something else you can do. I will give you some recommendations and you should search online on internet for more info about it, and also ask your doctor about any use of new medications.

Last year I was more skinny (I weighted 148 pounds, I am currently at 160 pounds but on diet now to lose at least 10 pounds) I am 5.6 feet. Well I am always looking on internet for natural products to use for myself, I research about breast cancer prevention and found info about iodine to decrease the risk of breast cancer (not that breast cancer runs on my family, but currently there,s a lot of breast cancer around) so I bought GNC Kelp pills that have 150 mcg of iodine each pill. I also read online that iodine less than 900 mcg per day was not harmful for the thyroid so I though well I,m going to take 300 mcg of iodine pills it won,t hurt I though. So, I started to take 300 mcg daily of Kelp (iodine) pills, like 1 week or 10 days after I started, without reason I started to felt very dizzy at nigths (it didn,t make sense for me, since I was eating plenty of high carb + fat food), then one morning I woke up and I was going to faint the dizzyness was extreme I knew it was low blood glucose (on my teens I did have full hypoglycemia episodes for spending days without eating so I did know the symptoms of hypoglycemia) I went straight to the kitchen and eat like 8 spoons full of sugar, go to bed and 10 minutes later no more dizzyness!!. I continue taking the iodine pills daily (300 mcg) and the dizzyness started to come back, in fact every week I was having like 1 or 2 episodes of full hypoglycemia I started to eat chocolate bars, candy, sweets and my blood glucose didn,t go up no matter how many sweets I ate it keep staying between 62-67 mgl. I start for 2 weeks a low-carb diet but this didn,t improve, I still was having Hypoglycemia episodes constantly. I stopped after 4 months the iodine pills since hypoglycemia were more and more constant. after I stopped, hypoglycemia episodes also stopped. I didn,t know what relation have iodine with hypoglycemia it didn,t make sense for me.

Well, searching on internet I found some light on this. Iodine goes to your thyroid, thyroid control all the body hormones, insulin is a body hormone and iodine increase the sensitivity of how body cells use insulin, so there was the problem, the GNC kelp pills increase my body cells for the hormone insulin and if before my body for example request 20 gram of insulin to burn a bar of chocolate, after the iodine pills probably the same chocolate bar only require 10 gram of my insulin to be burned...so I stayed with 10 gram left of insulin on my body that weren,t used so my blood glucose started to went down

I found some info online of iodine as treatment for people with diabetes type 2 to increase their body cell to sensitiviness to insulin (since body cells on type 2 diabetes refuse to use your body own insulin, iodine opens those cells and your body insulin start to enter in your blood again), also chromium piccolinate. But, search first before making any decision, also ask your doctor and use with caution.

Honey is not low carb. Neither are corn and peas. You might want to do more reading about carb content of vegetables. Be patient. It all doesn't happen at once.

Please don't keep taking those iodine pills without an thyroid test. Chromium picconate can really hurt your stomach also so be careful. Taking them together can make you very sick. Check with a doctor.

Ohh yeah, right, some "vegetables" have starch inside (like corn for example). Like JT Reagan said, read amount of carbs for vegetables too not all veggies are 100% approved to eat in big amounts.

And yes, I ask to anyone here if you wish for somehow to use iodine pills or iodine liquid *lugols for example* please first consult with your doctor, iodine on very high amounts (1,000 mcg according to medical research) is harmful to your thyroid and could cause more bad than good. I was taking only 300 mcg and it did affect a lot how my body use insulin (I was having constant hypoglycemia) I am not diabetic, I am not prediabetic as far as I know. There are research online about type 2 diabetes and iodine as treatment with great results (I even read on other boards type 2 diabetic people that use iodine with great results lowering their blood glucose) but, beware high doses can be dangerous for thyroid so I do not recommend use iodine without consulting your doctor first.

I give Chromium (150 mcg) to my husband daily, I heard that doses of > 250 mgc Chromium could not be so healthy, so I keep it low with him. He,s type 1 but he is getting fat and since he doesn,t take much care of his diabetes, maybe he is also insulin resistant so Chromium could help him there.

PD: I am not taking iodine pills anymore, I stopped last year and no more hypoglycemia episodes since. I did bought iron pills like 2 months ago, and started to have dizzyness again ...I read those iron pills ingredients and iodine was there (400 mcg) I stopped using those iron pills and dizzyness stopped too.

First, corn is not a vegetable; it is classified as a grain. Therefore it should not be on your food list unless it does not cause your sugar to spike. Peas are a very starchy vegetable and will usually cause a rise in blood sugar. Unless you are testing those foods alone to see how they affect your blood sugar, you probably should stay away from them. Honey is not kind to blood sugars. Although it is a natural sweetener, it is still like eating sugar. You ate those drumsticks without the skin. The skin is probably one of the best things for you to eat as a diabetic since it contains good fats that will keep you satiated. You should probably have had those drumsticks with a dry rub on it, along with a salad and some green beans, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, etc. Salad dressings should be EVOO with vinegar, or some type of cream dressing like ranch. Be cautious of salad dressings because some of them can contain a lot of carbs and sugar.

Please visit the recipe section of this forum. You will find many wonderful tasty foods there, and most of them will not cause spikes in blood sugars.

Most importantly, before you go whole hog and spend lots of money on foods from a list, it is important for you to test, test, and test some more on individual foods to see how your blood sugar responds to them. Every diabetic is unique, and therefore some foods are okay for one, but not another.

corn pops:

I take 400 mcg of GTF chromium daily. That is a safe dose to take daily. I don't know about taking anything above that, but I know I read I can take up to 400 mcg a day. I have no problems with it.

Most of us would've spiked from that meal, too. Simply put, carbohydrates --> glucose in your blood, regardless of whether they're considered healthy or 'whole' or anything else. Corns, peas, and honey, especially in combination, are going to raise blood sugar in any diabetic. You only need to pull off the skin if it's breaded or you don't like the taste. Otherwise, go for it. For a side, try some buttered or cheesy broccoli.

Thanks for the information NayNay. I though that doses of Chromium higher than 250 mcg were already dangerous (I saw that warning on some website on internet, but again, it weren't good sources just those ones that appear online on any website). I am very cautious on what I give to my husband since I wouldn,t like to cause more damage than good on him, I though that 150 mcg of Chromium for him wouldn,t hurt since he,s getting fat (he is 6 feet tall and currently 216 pounds he was 205 pounds 3 months ago) and fat is one cause for insulin resistance, even if he is type 1 he can maybe have some resistance who knows.

I,m going to increase his Chromium dose to 250 mcg per day, I don,t say 400 mcg daily since he wouldn,t take this dose (would be 8 pills each one is 50 mcg) and I prefer him to take the Chromium pills instead of refusing to take it.

Definitely go with veggies that have fewer carbs: cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, winter squash, cucumbers... and remember you can have lots of butter on them.
