Default Diet is upside down a bit

So as part of my re-evaluation and getting ready for my next year as a diabetic. I've gone thu some retesting of meals. Which is a good thing but I've found an issue.

I knew that I was sensitive to carbs in the AM - but somewhere last year I thought it was OK to add a slice of whole wheat toast. Wrong. My usual morning breakfast - one egg - 1/3 c chopped peppers and onions - 2 sausage links - coffee + cream - buttered whole wheat toast. My fasting BS is usually between 80 -95.

I had that breakfast Monday and my BS at 1 hour was 142 and at 2hrs 125.

I had that breakfast Tuesday with NO TOAST my BS at 1 hour 110 and 2hrs 112.

I had that breakfast Wednesday and my BS at 1hr was 150 and 2hrs at 136.

I had that breakfast Thursday with half a piece of toast and my BS at 1hr was 144 and 2hrs at 128.

So after all this jabber my question is do any of you see any variation in the morning numbers based on - when you take your morning meds ? Typically a bit rushed in the AM and pop my meds in my mouth with my first bites of food. Should I take them a bit earlier ? Just wondering.

Beyond that I also found that the Apple slices I've been eating during the day also jack up my BS numbers to around 130-ish.

Thanks for your help - I'm off to the breakfast thread

As I recall your a big man, that breakfast looks like a snack for me, 1 egg, 2 links. Drop the toast, add in a couple more eggs and some sausage links, you will be fine, numbers looked good with out the toast.

I never did. But then I didn't test that extensively, just took my met when I woke up. When I'd forget, my numbers would tick up a bit by the afternoon, but met never had that immediate an impact on me, probably because mostly I took the ER version.

I did see a variation in my numbers based on if I ate toast (bread):

no bread - slight rise
bread - *spike*

Thanks MCS - indeed its too low and I also hope to start riding the bike to work (7 mi of rolling hills) as the weather get better. So I need to get enough calories.

Thought about adding peanut butter to the toast to up the fats.

And yes the past 4 days I've been pretty light on daily calories in my confusion.

Fortunately my lunch and dinner choices remain good.

If your stuck on something toast like for breakfast buy some low carb tortillas or some WASA light and crisp crackers, there the size of your hand and only have 10 g of carbs per 3 crackers. They are nothing but air, they do have a crunch though, wife eats them every morning. If your body is anything like mine was when first Dxed it's important to make yourself feel full or your liver will do it for you in the morning. In my beginning I had to eat a small amount of fast acting carbs just to wake things up, but it was a fine line between waking things up and over loading the system.

Since you also take glipizide in the morning, I'd say yes the timing is important too. I would take it about 30 min before breakfast.

Yes - I'm going to consider this. Goal remains to keep my numbers good as I head to Summer and hopefully 15lbs lighter and try dropping the glipizide.

So I struggle on and if any of you have some ideas I'd appreciate it. Looks like I've got to finely balance my carbs in the morning. My numbers and info are below - I'm guessing I had a liver dump at 3 or 4 hours after breakfast.

fasting BS - 95 - finish breakfast at 6:50AM - 2 eggs - 2 sausage - diced pepper and onion (third cup) - little cheese - coffee w cream.

8AM - BS 127
9AM - BS 126
10AM - BS 142 --- after the BS reading I had cheese stick - quarter cup blueberries - handful plain almonds - water
11AM - BS 152

11:30 - Bowl of very hearty Pork and Poblano stew - water
1PM - BS 118

In the afternoon I had more almonds - half of a protein bar - at 4:30 after getting home my BS is 100. And as a note we had this same stew last night - pre meal BS 95 post meal was 117 and I was a total pig.

So my take is I need to either get some carbs into breakfast even if it moves me up mid 130s - or have some carbs between 8 - 9AM to keep liver form dumping. This is so frustrating as once I get past noon all things become reasonable.

Your comments and suggestions are welcome - part of this too is I would like to ride a bike in the morning. Not sure if that will help - hurt - or make me feel worse.

I hope you don't mind if I chime in. If you are having high numbers in the morning and need something to keep you full try Flax. I don't need a big brealfast and I make a sort porridge with ground flax. It always lowers my fasting BG. I don't often test my fasting any more because it is pretty stable and I know for the last 2 months whenever I tested it was lower after breakfast. I did test 2 days ago and my fasting was 4.7 (85). 2 hours after breakfast it was 4.5 (81)

My flax porridge
1/2 to 3/4 cup golden flax meal--I grind it myself
a sprinkle of cinnamon
Mix with enough boiling water to make it a porridge like consistancy
add a little cream and a bit of brown sugar splenda. I like the taste. I also use flax on yogurt or pudding

Flax has 49G carbs per cup and 46 fiber. It is high in antioxidents and omega 3. The oil and fiber may have a laxative effect so start with a little and work up

Patdart and donnaB like this.

You need something to prevent a liver dump, but low/zero-carb intake will work a lot better than some carby snack. All your liver wants is food - not carbs. Eat some nuts, eat some cheese, have a beef stick. Adding back carbs does no good at all.
